This Saturday I’m seeing Vertigo on the big screen and this Sunday I’m seeing To Catch a Thief on the big screen.
I’m not sure if I can say this definitively – seeing as I have this really personal love for Notorious and North by Northwest – but I think that Vertigo may be Hitchcock’s best film. As in his most perfectly realized idea.
I am so excited. It’s SUCH a great flick. And I’m taking someone who, unbelievably, has never seen it before. Which will be even MORE exciting!!
red,
Just curious, have you seen the new King Kong? Other than the miscasting of Jack Black, I thought it was spectacular, and very true to the original.
Tim – I haven’t seen it yet! I do want to. I love Naomi Watts, first of all. I have loved her ever since her big break in that crazy David Lynch movie (which, I realize, is redundant). She’s pretty kickass in terms of acting.
as good as she is, i think she may have been out-acted by the ape in this flick! :)
tim – hahaha Hard to compete with a giant ape.
I saw it yesterday and I’ll second what Tim said, minus saying Jack Black was miscast. I loved him in the role. Love him in anything, actually.
And Naomi Watts was amazing: a huge part of why I think this one was BETTER than the original. I may have to post a full review…and now I realize I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually written a movie review before. I’m looking forward to it.
Okay, Sheila? (Don’t read ahead if you don’t want a very small but possibly useful revelation about King Kong.)
I’m feeling a wee protective of you here.
Am I wrong to warn you that there are, you know, critters in one — and only one — scary scene vaguely reminiscent of “S’s”? And “vaguely” is an understatement used to soften the blow here? I wasn’t sure if their presence would be a deal breaker for you or not.
But that’s what hands are for, right? Palms for covering, fingers for peeking.
I thought perhaps someone should tell you ….
Otherwise, movie’s GREAT! hahahaha …. ha
Tracey – you have absolutely no idea how much I appreciate that warning.
Now I need to know more. When should I gear up for it? Is it in the beginning?
I’m laughing with relief here, Sheila, because I was driving my husband crazy with “Do you think I should post this? I mean some people hate that. Am I giving the movie away? I don’t want to be one of THOSE people. I HATE those people! Do you think I should post it?”
It was so deeply idiotic and annoying and hormoniacal. He was amazingly patient … for a short while, then:
“JUST. POST. IT.”
Long-suffering fellow, that man.
Anyway, no, it’s not at the beginning. Uhm, about 2/3rds through, I’d quesstimate? Halfway-ish. Not too helpful there, I suppose. I don’t want to say more without ACTUALLY giving something away.
By the way, have a GREAT time watching those two flicks on the big screen. It’s gonna be fantastic, I’m sure!
Please, tracey, I beg of you: how will I know which scene it is?
Are they in a jungle? Does something happen BEFOREhand where I know: oh, here it comes …?
I was fine at the last LOTR movie because I knew when I would have to start covering my eyes, because I knew when that damn S would appear.
Yes. I am phobic. I am a highly functioning adult, but in this regard I am totally phobic.
Okay — They are in the jungle, not New York. haha
I just remembered there is a creepy bug — not an S — in an earlier scene — I think the first time she tries to run away from Kong.
But the biggun’ happens — if memory serves — after Kong does some serious logrolling and causes a bunch of her would-be rescuers to fall into a ravine.
Watch out for that ravine.
DO NOT GO INTO THAT RAVINE WITH THEM, SHEILA!!
(Is this helpful? Hope I’m remembering the order correctly.)
Also — not ALL of them are S’s, but there are MANY creepy, crawly S-like creatures and a few ACTUAL S’s.
Plus, they are VERY LARGE.
The whole scene just scared — and grossed — the crap outta me.
There. I think I’ve done my due diligence here!;-)
tracey –
I cannot tell you how awful it would have been to have such a scene just SPRUNG upon me.
I am going to have a nightmare just from reading your comments – BUT it is good to be emotionally prepared. For “s”s.
shivering just thinking about it …
No, no! No nightmare!
Okay. Bunnies. Puppies. Kitties. Ewan McGregor. Jeff Bridges.
And Cary Grant.
CARY GRANT, SHEILA!
