The Honeycombs, 1964: “Have I the Right to Kiss You?”

Uhm, yes, if you “grrrr” at me like that one more time, not only do you have the RIGHT to kiss me, but I’ll ask, “What the hell is taking you so long?”

The Honeycombers were Joe-Meek-produced and this was their only charting hit. I saw on Twitter that they might be planning a mini-reunion tour, so you know I’m gonna be keeping my eyes peeled for them.

Plus: A Dame-Drummer in a Boy Band. Unheard of at that time. Still practically unheard of.

Good lord, can you IMAGINE the effort some of today’s listeners would put into being offended by those lyrics?

Those growls are a seriously fucking fantastic hook. What a great song.

  3. What a memory flogger! Loved this song when I was 20 years old in 1964. Completely forgot all about it until right this minute.

    Thank God for You Tube!

Memory lane for me, too! Didn’t know what they looked like then, but the lead singer definitely would have made me all swoony! Oh, those cheekbones, Frenchy look. and the growl!

Sylvia – The cheekbones are extraordinary, yes!!

I honestly didn’t know anything about these people and was not familiar with the song – and I fell in love with it. It’s so exuberant!
