“One Zip.”

Jimmy Fallons recounts his story of being challenged (repeatedly) to a game of ping pong by Prince. It’s long, but worth it. And Questlove tells the final (perfect) beat of the story.

Lots of Prince encounters going around (as they always were, as long as he was with us), but this is now one of my favorites. It is so RANDOM.

Ha ha ha, this is insane and beautiful. Some people just know how to build their legend.

The part that is really cracking me up right now is that you know that Prince had to be standing behind that curtain at the ping pong place for quite some time before Jimmy Fallon showed up.

So just picture him waiting behind that curtain – in character – in that pose – so that Jimmy Fallon would “discover” him that way.

That is SUCH a hilarious image to me!!!

I love how he always let every one else sweat it while he laughed at them. Seems to be a running theme in his life. Probably the only person in the world with an ego like that who didn’t get called on it–because he really was as awesome as he thought he was–just a fact!

Also he had a sense of humor about it. He seemed to want to give people crazy funny stories to tell. i mean, Charlie Murphy basketball/pancakes, hello!

But also: he really really REALLY wanted to play ping pong with Jimmy Fallon. Like, he lost sleep about it. hahahaha

Elvis used to do crazy shit like that too.

You don’t get to be that famous by learning how to take “No” for an answer. :)

I hate using past tense so much!

Ping pong, ha! I have a friend who’s a runner for the stars when they come to town, picking them up from the airport and driving them to their hotel and venue etc. He has some crazy stories about some of the things he’s been asked to do, but whenever Prince was in concert, he always got my friend to locate a ping pong table which he asked to have set up UNDERNEATH the stage. After he was done his set, he’d immediately go under the stage and play ping pong (I guess with whomever he happened to challenge that night).

The whole story is just so insane, in a glorious way. I’m still wrapping my head around the concept of “Spin, Susan Sarandon’s ping-pong club.” I mean, what!? And the whole “Grey Poupon” part at the end…HAHAHA!

    • sheila says:

Ha!!! I know – the whole thing is just crazy.

Susan Sarandon produced (and maybe directed) a whole movie about her ping pong club and ping pong obsessives – I haven’t seen it – and now I am not remembering the name – but yes, I love that she owns a club for ping pong players. I seriously need to visit!!

      “Ask your boy.” HAHAHAHA

      • sheila says:

Oh no – I was wrong – her movie isn’t a documentary about her ping pong club – it’s a narrative feature called Ping Pong Summer.

I need to see it. I love people who get obsessed with random things!
