Oh my God, Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here (2018)

It’s as good as I’ve heard. Better. I’m a huge fan of Lynne Ramsay (#1) and also a huge fan of Joaquin Phoenix, who is in a really masterful phase of his career. No bullshit: he’s awesome. This is a great film. And see her Morvern Callar if you haven’t already.

I reviewed You Were Never Really Here for Rogerebert.com.

It’s so good. I was only allowed to exhale once it’s over. And it’s … funny? Too? Mainly because Ramsay is working at such a dizzying height of power and confidence. She’s doing whatever the hell she wants to do – but it’s tight as hell.

And Joaquin … can’t say enough good things!!!

Exhilarating to have the opportunity to see two artists at the peak of their skills. I love it! XOXO Stevie

In a recent interview, she called him her “soulmate.” I think they really really clicked.

          • Stevie says:

Wow, that is so cool. Talk about magic. Inspiring each other, helping each other achieve their vision… That’s love, right!

            It’s so great!

I’ve always loved her – a really tough person from a tough background – who doesn’t make films with easy answers or explanations. But they’re also – weirdly – crime stories too. They’re fascinating.

And Joaquin is just riveting. It’s not at all a vain performance.

You know how sometimes actor trying to “be ugly” in their roles are still doing it with a sense of vanity? “Look at me being all ugly and scraggly” Yuk.

he’s basically just beyond those concerns.
