Review: Beast (2018)

Newcomer Jessie Buckley is a total revelation. Thrillingly alive performance in Beast. Highly recommended.

My review of Beast is now up on Rogerebert.com.

I watched this last night. What a surprising film – such a slow revelation about Moll. I was wondering about the title – is there no Beauty to transform the Beast? Who is the Beast, which is the captive, who is free? Who should be freed by being loved? Neither of them, as it turns out.

The movies was very well done. The acting was universally excellent – but Jessie Buckley really stood out. I love how she kept revealing more, how some things Moll realized as she went along were new to her, others were hidden from the audience but kept real and believable when ultimately narrated. I also really liked the detective from the mainland brought in to help with the investigation – a lot like Gillian Anderson’s job in The Fall. And she was correct about Moll’s motivations. A creepy movie where you end up not rooting for the young lovers!
