Black Lives Matter

“You’re walking down life’s road, society’s foot is on your throat, every which way you turn you can’t get from under that foot. And you reach a fork in the road and you can either lie down and die, or insist upon your life.” — Odetta

I am so done. I grew up in the sixties and I remember the riots and the stupidity. My mother was a coordinator for CORE and marched on Washington. I remember the FBI coming to our house. I remember being the only black kid from fourth grade through high school. On Jewish holidays, there were 3 kids in class in a total class size of 33 kids. Linda Aviles, Susan Wong and me. I am working on my seventh decade and I do not understand why some white people, particularly those in power, are so fucking scared of us, that they think it’s okay to murder, steal and generally treat non whites as second class citizens. It is a pattern. Brits did it to Indians and Africans. Native Americans didn’t die fast enough so they were herded to reservations. Japanese were sent to internment camps. What is wrong with these people?

Carolyn – thank you for your perspective.

I am also very concerned about the white agitators/agents provocateurs – who are creating a sea of misinformation and purposefully turning peaceful protests into violent ones – who are these people driving in from out of state? who is paying them? These people do NOT support the aims of the protests. and so the rightfully angry and peaceful protestors are being blamed for setting buildings/cars on fire – or that one black woman who filmed two white women spray-painting BLM on a Starbucks – and then screaming in her face when she told them to stop – there are videos showing that much of this arson and smashing windows is being done by white people.

It’s designed to discredit not just the current protests – but to discredit even the IDEA of a peaceful protest. Our right to protest – our right to assemble – our right to gather in large groups – our freedom of the press – is under attack. A reporter from the LA Times said that she’s been in war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq and never before has she been shot at for being a member of the press – until now.

      This is fascism.

I don’t know what is wrong with people – and it’s not just happening here – as you know – but around the globe. Fascism on the rise everywhere. Again.

I’m so sorry for the pain and hurt and anger you are feeling, and for the pain everywhere. I stand with everyone protesting injustice and police brutality and racism.
