For Film Comment: Shane & Everybody Wants Some!!

There’s a new column on Film Comment called “Seeing Double”, where writers explore connections between different movies, potential double bills. So I wrote about Shane and Everybody Wants Some!!, a piece I’d been wanting to write for a couple of years. What on EARTH could these two movies have in common? Hat tip to Mitchell, since this piece started as a conversation we had one day when we watched these movies back to back.

Anyway, head over to Film Comment to check it out!

    Sheila,

I read your Film Comment article on Shane and Everybody Wants Some! with great interest. I’ll limit my comments to Shane since it’s one of my all-time favorite movies and because I haven’t seen Everybody Wants Some!

You did an excellent job delineating Shane’s character, especially his need not to show off his masculinity. This is beautifully rendered in the first scene when he happens upon Joe Starrett’s homestead. He talks about Jersey cows. When little Joey says he bets Shane knows a lot about guns, Shane simply says, “a little bit.” When Joe Starrett runs him off his homestead under the mistaken belief that Shane is part of the Ryker clan, Shane, after telling Starrett to put down his gun, rides off – but he returns, without a word, and helps Starrett stare down the Rykers. And then he walks away, again without saying a word, until Starrett stops him and invites him for dinner. After that dinner, comes one of my favorite lines. He stands and tells Mrs. Starrett, “that was a very elegant dinner.”

Again, very nice job with your article.

    Best,
