Who’s the best female literary character of all time?
My first choice is Harriet the Spy. With Jane Eyre and Molly Bloom following close behind.
Please discuss.

I’d agree with your first choice if the thought of tomato sandwiches didn’t make me gag.
Ramona Quimby, Age 8.
Ha! Tomato sandwiches!
Different choices for different reasons:
1) Clarissa Harlowe: because of her intelligence and willpower (and no, I haven’t finished the book)
2) Elizabeth Bennett: for pretty much the same reason, although Elizabeth is less deadly serious than Clarissa and quite a bit bitchier
3) “The Monkey” from Portnoy’s Complaint: She is like Lolita in that she has a relationship with a much more intelligent and learned man but ends up gaining the reader’s sympathy and affection far more than the man does.
4) Lolita: same reason
5) Juliet: her powerful capacity for love, her emotional honesty, and her sheer physical courage
6) Britomart: Elizabethan Wonder Woman
Heinlein’s Friday
I’d have to go with Elizabeth Bennett or Jane Eyre, as the start of articulate female consciousness.
But you know which Jane Austen creation is really my favorite. :)
Certainly Elizabeth Bennett, but other choices that come to mind include Clara Allen from Lonesome Dove, Lynn Bracken from L.A. Confidential, Hester from A Prayer for Owen Meany, and of course there’s always Peppermint Patty and Lucy from Peanuts (do they count as literary characters?).
Nancy Drew, girl detective.
Darn! Nobody beat me to Friday, but has thoughtfully left it up to me to suggest Deety Carter.
What about Judy Blume’s Margaret?
I would agree with Ramona, as well.
Olympia from Geek Love and Jenny from Garp have always stayed with me..Suge Avery from The Color Purple as well…
