Color Me Obsessed: Documentary About The Replacements

Here’s the trailer (click on that widget above, it takes you to the trailer page). I am especially excited about this because I am peripherally involved, which I will now brag shamelessly about.

My brother is one of the faithful. A Replacements fan from back in the dark ages of the 1980s, when it was, to say the least, not cool. I love how my brother writes about music so I asked him to write something about The Replacements for my site. Which he did.

Years passed.

Then, early this summer, my brother was contacted by the producers of upcoming documentary (which, of course, all Replacement fans were aware was in the works – there is no devotion like the devotion of a Replacements fan), and they wanted to interview the diehard fans. The producer had come across that piece written by my brother on my site, and found Brendan somehow through that, tracking him down. They would be coming to LA soon, would he mind being interviewed for the documentary?

Would he mind??

The filmmakers have been traveling around the country finding the fans who have been carrying the torch for 30 years now.

It would be like a Cary Grant Foundation finding me, and asking me to pontificate on why I love Cary Grant.

There is no expert like the fan.

Watch the trailer. My brother is given the last line. Thrilling!

My favorite band. I tip my cap to your brother.

  2. sheila says:

    Pretty cool, right?

  3. Dan says:

Yes indeed. Your brother must have been thrilled!

  4. Brendan O'Malley says:

I was flabbergasted. I simply cannot believe that I’m going to be part of the record when it comes to their history. So excited and honored. Hoping the film gets widely seen.

  5. Kate P says:

How cool for The Replacements (gotta go dig up some tapes) and Brendan. Also: _loved_ D.J. Donna Donna when I was a ’90s college kid and was thrilled to see her.

  6. sheila says:

Kate – loved that you recognized one of the people!

  7. seang says:

Man, I should have never thrown out my Replacements t-shirt . When “Unsatisfied” came on in that movie “Adventureland” it absolutely ruined me.

  8. sheila says:

seang – wow. I love to hear that. Music can be so powerful that way, powerful like no other art form.

  9. Jake Cole says:

Oh my God this is the coolest news ever. For all I care, you could push the ’80s into the sea so long as you saved Husker Du, The Smiths, Minutemen, Mission of Burma and The Replacements. Who on Earth even has the gall to write a love lament revolving around a damn answering machine?!?!? AND make it one of the most heartbreaking songs you ever did hear? I think it would have been worth living through that awful decade if I had the chance to see them and Minutemen in person. Way glad for your brother, Sheila.

And I apologize for starting to go back through stuff. I’ve been swamped with course work all semester and I’ve missed out on so much blog perusing. Tip to aspiring journalists: it is in the right spirit to fill up a schedule to avoid wasting time and money, but for the love of God do not take four separate writing classes at once, three of which require constant interviewing for new stories each week.

  10. sheila says:

Jake – I kind of love it when I notice people going back and perusing through archives. It makes me remember pieces I’ve written that I had otherwise forgotten. For the most part, I put stuff up on the spur of the moment – put my heart into it, of course – but then let it go and move on to the next thing. So it’s fun when people go back and find stuff.

I can’t wait for this doc!

My brother is eloquent on his music experiences in the 80s (he writes about it a lot on his own site), and he has definitely helped me to realize where The Replacements fall into all of that. I was way more of a pop-music person in the 80s (my first concert ever was Huey Lewis & the News, for example), so it’s great to hear my brother’s perspective.

He also has a great story about finally meeting Paul Westerberg at a solo show in Los Angeles. What did they discuss? Their sons (who were both children at the time) and how much they both loved the Spongebob Square Pants movie. Paul Westerberg saying to my brother, “I thought that movie was fucking great.” hahahahahaha

If you could have told my brother back in the 80s that he would talk about THAT with his idol if he ever finally met him – he never would have believed it.

    The beauty of life!

the most influential band of the last 30 years by far….blows everyone else out of the water..rip bob

  12. Tim Grimes says:

I can’t wait to see “Color Me Obsessed”. It’ll be at the Chicago film fest in a few weeks. Replacements were the first band I heard when I was 15 that finally spoke to me. Everyone else was listening to Poison and Bobby Brown in my small town while I was jamming to “Customer” late at night in my local grocery store as a bag boy.
I’ve actually put together a pilot for a Television show about a band that’s sort of like them. If anybody knows somebody with any sort of connections in the entertainment industry, I’d really appreciate it. I think its time we finally see a television series about a band that takes the subject matter seriously. I mean I loved Flight of the Conchords, Monkees and even Partridge Family(well a little bit). But I think the Mats have an amazing story to be told if its done the right way. Please help me make this happen. Thanks y’all!

I really appreciate this website and I loved that documentary about my all time favorite band and to just discover the connection today while rummaging around in your archives is a pleasant surprise. “It’s fun to be one of the people who…knows”.
