Happy birthday to Manny Ramirez!

I think my favorite thing about Manny is his demeanor at the plate. He looks as casual as if he were lounging in his Lazy-boy watching TV. Like … he just stands there. Whatever. No big deal. I’m a major-league ballplayer, I’m a hitting powerhouse … and whatever. No big deal, man, it’s just what I do. It looks like his thought process is: “Wow. Blue sky. I like the smell of hotdogs. I’m hungry. I’ve got an itch on my ass. Oh wait a sec … here comes the pitch …”

Happy birthday, Manny!

A few years ago I read an article about Manny (SI or ESPN Mag, I think) that unlike most other major league hitters who try to guess what pitch is coming or at least try to pick up the rotation to determine if it’s a slider, curve, etc., Manny doesn’t. He just sees the ball and swings. His hands are that fast. I’m guessing there was a certain amount of sportwriter myth-making involved but with Manny you can believe it.

I just wish he would wear a uniform that fits. He looks so sloppy.

Hope they can pull it off tomorrow night. Jean and I will be at Fenway with 43 of our closest friends. (O’Mist bus trip) I NEEEED them to win.

This is going to sound so pretentious but it’s true, when I did a commercial with Tim Wakefield he was constantly repeating Manny’s line from last year’s shoe commercial where the guy reads his mind and says, “World Series MVP huh?” And Manny says, “Exactly!” and then turns to the camera with probably the worst filmed double-take in the history of the double-takes. When I asked him if the guys bust Manny’s balls all the time about it he said Manny wouldn’t even know it if we did. HA! I LOVE MANNY! He gets so much shit and guess what, he hasn’t committed one error this year! Not one.
