Notes on Project Runway

— I loved how Kara’s design was kind of held back until we saw it on the runway. Because of Kara’s track record, I assumed it would not be good – but actually it was one of my favorites. She really came thru. I loved the combination of green and purple.

–Poor Nick. He seems beaten down by criticism. I love him. I loved how Daniel came over and basically, in a loving way, bitch-slapped him out of apathy. And I loved how Nick didn’t get defensive and just took the critique and changed his attitude. I loved that.

— Strange: all the judges seemed baffled by the fact that none of the designers used flowers. Or not as MANY flowers as they THOUGHT should be used. Uhm – the assignment was: Go to the plant store. Spend 100 bucks. Make a dress for a garden party. There was no word about: “PLEASE MAKE IT ALL ABOUT ROSEBUDS OR PEONIES!!” But judge after judge was like: “I am really shocked at how much green we see up there …” Listen, judges, if you want them to use flowers – then put it in the requirements for the project. Otherwise: SHADDUP.

— I love Santino’s imitation of Tim and I think it is absolutely hysterical that … his imitation kind of morphed into a small running gag about Tim and Andre eating at Red Lobster and having arguments. SO RANDOM. Just my kind of humor. Santino has greasy hair and he is obnoxious but I actually really like him.

— Daniel’s dress was absolutely stunning. I love the kind of harsh look of his model as well – the slashed cheekbones, the small eyes – she is very striking.

— Andre’s dress was heinous. It was a mossy doormat that didn’t fit his model. It made her look like a box set.

But he took the critique well, he listened, he nodded, he was upset, but he didn’t defend himself. He was extremely gracious in defeat – the way he hugged Nick back, and made a joke about only one person crying on the runway at a time. He’s only 23 years old, but he handled his defeat in a very mature manner. He’s got a long career ahead of him.

— Tim Gunn is literally one of my favorite personalities on television right now. I want him in my life. I want him to periodically show up at my apartment from time to time and tell me what I need to work on. The tough-love speech was great!

— I LOVED Chloe’s dress.

I loved, too, how she said, “I went kind of out there and made my model wear a little skull cap of leaves …” To me, that was what Tim Gunn was saying in the tough-love speech: Push the envelope. If you fail, you fail, whatever – but you have to be bold. Push the envelope. I thought her dress was gorgeous.

— I love when Heidi gets all – specific and irritated in the pow-wow sections before the final choice. I just love it – you really see her fashion-brain working there. Also, she continues to illuminate the world with her pregnant German glow. Gorgeous.

— Daniel now has immunity for the next project. I truly wonder if he will win. Nick appears to be growing bitter and “over it” which is affecting his work. Daniel continues to sail along, doing his own thing, and making it through challenge after challenge.

— But for me – after Kara’s disastrous “oooh, look how dangeorus New York is!!” stupid tube dress – her design was the real surprise. It was truly lovely.

You left out MY favorite thing, which was when Kara helped Chloe get her dress finished. I love it that there is no back-stabbing in this reality series, and that they all really seem to care about each other.

  2. red says:

Bev – I love that part of this show too! They’re competing – but they’re all kind of rooting each other on as well.

  3. Alex says:

    Dammit!

I gotta get in the groove here.

  4. Dean Esmay says:

This tends to surprise people but my wife will confirm it: I tend to have a good eye for women’s fashion. I don’t know why. I don’t read fashion magazines. I pay almost no attention to my own fashion or to the fashion of males. But I can just look at an outfit and generally tell whether it will look good on a particular woman or not, and even–yes, please don’t hold it against me–how to accessorize it effectively.

Many of my readers would mock me mercilessly if they knew this, but it’s quite true. I must have an Inner Gay Man screaming to get out. He’s very quiet, but then I find myself watching Project Runway. It’s fucking insidious.

Especially because so far I almost invariably agree with the judges. Except they were wrong last week, the winner was the dress based on the oil slick.

  5. Betsy says:

You have to read Tim’s Blog on the PR website – he’s great. He talks about what the judges don’t get ($100 isn’t going to buy a lot of flowers vs. greens) and gives a nice tribute to Andrae, ending with “see you at Red Lobster”. He’s great!

I also love the “when I came out” discussion.

  6. Dean Esmay says:

You can buy a ton of flowers on $100. Just make sure they’re dandelions from some farm somewhere. Then no problem!

  7. Dean Esmay says:

(Yes that was sarcasm. The judges were idiots.)

  8. red says:

However much you can buy for 100 bucks (and I trust Tim Gunn’s opinion on that, Dean) , the judges did not stipulate flowers. They just said “plants”. If they had an expectation of flowers, then they should have said so!!

And I know people from all walks of life, all sexual preferences, who love this show. I think it’s one of the best shows out there – mainly because it literally shows people creating things out of nothing. The creative process – Okay, you have an hour to create something: GO. I am blown away by that!

  9. red says:

Betsy – I have to check out Tim’s blog – I keep hearing about it!! He has literally become one of my favorite personalities on television. I just LOVE him. His serious stern face, that voice, those loafers – he’s so awesome! And he really knows what he’s talking about too.

The whole Red Lobster thing killed me!!

  10. red says:

Alex – you definitely have to get in the groove.

But first, I believe you need to get Bravo!

Although, I know, I know, “nothing works” in your house. I’ve realized that nothing works in mine either. My damn laptop – my DVD player – my alarm clock – EVERYTHING has some stupid quirk!!

  11. red says:

Dean – hahahaha I just thought it was so weird that … they had this expectation and didn’t verbalize it to – you know – THE DESIGNERS!!

I also LOVED how Heidi Klum said, when they all were dissing Santino’s shiny leaves: “I have NO problem with the shininess.”

She’s just so cute. I am in love with her.

  12. Jen says:

It makes me so happy that you write about this every week. Go Daniel!

  13. mitchell says:

-Daniel..is the man..i love him..he’s gentle and smart and creative.
-Sheila ..that is a brilliant idea to have Tim Gunn come over and tell us what to fix… we need you Tim!!
-Kara’s dress was gorgeous..but im not convinced it wasnt a fluke. She hasnt been my fave.
-Nick needs to get his head out of his ass and get his head in the game!
-and Dean…i mean this with love…please get over apologizing for having interests and or talents that are stereotypically “gay”…its a waste of ur obviously creative and enlightened energy…as a gay man whose best male friends are str8..ive learned over and over that gay men and str8 men are sooo much more alike than they are different..it may look different or be expressed differently as far as cultural affiliations…but we are all men..like it or not..we have a lot in common..i dont apologize for being naturally athletic or being the person that my friends turn to in crisis just because they are not “gay” traits persay…im not picking on u..i swear…im giving u (presumptuously,im aware) psychic permission to let all that crap go…lets move on togehter..all of us…men…I’ll go to Wrigley Field with u and u go see Patti Lupone in Sweeney Todd with me…deal???? I promise we will both have a blast!

  14. red says:

    Mitchell – Amen!!!

It’s hysterical – Brendan had never watched the show, and then somehow tripped over it – He felt like he was a bit caught up having read my posts, and he left me this CRAZY message (it was the Sasha Cohen episode) saying: “I truly think that Sasha chose the wrong outfit.”

hahahahahahaha This was after seeing ONE episode! He was so sucked in, and not only that, but he had OPINIONS about it. I loved that.

And yes – I have not been wacky about one of Kara’s designs, although I like her personally.

Nick does have – dare I say it – a kind of trashy fashion sense. I REALLY like him as a person (uhm – have you met him, Sheila?) but I’m not wacky about his taste.

Daniel, however, is just lovely. I thought his dress that was shaped like an orchid (last week’s design) was STUNNING. It would look absolutely heinous on me – but on a girl who is slim with skinny legs – it would look phenomenal. I just love his fashion sense.

I think I need to hire Tim Gunn as a … life coach, or something. I just want him in my life, and that’s final!

  15. red says:

Oh and Mitchell – I got your message on Wednesday – but my phone’s volume was turned down, and grrrrr, I didn’t pick it up until Thursday.

next week, let’s watch the show together on the phone, mkay? that was SO FUN.

  16. mitchell says:

yes..its a date!!!!…i bet Bren would be hilarious watching this show too…you know..he’s so reticent about expressing an opinion!

  17. red says:

I really wish he would come out of his shell. It’s tragic, actually.

  18. red says:

I believe that Brendan feels that Chloe may win the whole thing. I just thought it was so funny how he clicked right into it … hahahaha

    “I think Chloe’s the best.”

I love her stuff as well … but it is my belief (my deeply held belief) that Daniel will win the whole shebang.

  19. mitchell says:

i really do think Daniel is going to take it…Santino is without a doubt super creative..but often his clothes are just ugly…Daniel’s clothes are elegant and u can picture actual humans wearing them..as opposed to supermodels.

  20. Mitch says:

I’ve been betting for the last month on a Chloe/Daniel/Santino finale. Daniel just seems to have it, plus the show needs Santino for the conflict, plus Choe’s both talented and babe-o-licious (gotta do something for us straights, right?)

I betcha Daniel takes the whole thing, though. Not sure if they’ve taped the finale or when, but something about the way they’re covering him seems like foreshadowing.

  21. red says:

I also like how Chloe basically took responsibility for the fact that she ran out of time. She didn’t pull the old Zulema “I ran out of time” excuse – she just flat out said, “It’s nobody’s fault but my own.” I like her a lot.

I just, for the first time, saw the note that comes up at the end of the show – something about how the judges consult with the producers about who should win – like – they have to take input from the producers. I would love to be a fly on the wall at those meetings!!!

    I’m just imagining:

All the judges saying: “Santino has got to go!! He never actually does the project! He’s talented but he has got to go!” And the producers saying: “But he’s great for the show! He stays!!!”

  22. Jessica says:

Yeah, I’ve been thinking the same thing. I think it’s why Andrae and Nick have both stuck around in situations where they were really close to getting cut. They’re the two most commonly used guys for facial reactions and their commentaries.

I definitely agree on the Chloe and Daniel getting the final three. I don’t know if Santino deserves the third spot, but they definitely need someone to create some drama because Chloe and Daniel are so consistent and reliable and non-drama. But that’s why I like them so much.

  23. mitchell says:

Project Runway discussions make me deliriously happy!

  24. Jon F. says:

I missed your PR posts when you were in LA! Glad you’re back!

I’ve become a Santino fan. The way he acknowledged that he’s in trouble and the way he handled getting caught by Tim Gunn was VERY good.

And yes, I want Tim Gunn as a boss, friend, life coach, whatever! The guy is awesome.

I didn’t like the challenge this week. Plant dresses? Blah. Talented and creative no doubt – extremely difficult, but not “real.”

As for last week, Daniel V. should’ve have won. Andre’s was KICK ASS. DV’s looked good – you could tell exactly where his inspiration came from – but didn’t the judges berate someone in the Nicky Hilton episode for creating something that would just get you laughed at on the red carpet?

  25. Dean Esmay says:

Mitchell: I mean this with love, but, lighten up dude. I’ve only had friends in the gay community for about 25 years. I was just joking. ;-)

  26. Dave J says:

I must offer many sincere thanks to JetBlue for putting DirectTV on all their flights: I would have never really thought to watch this show, but I am now INSTANTLY addicted. Absolutely love it. LITERALLY can’t wait for the next one.

  27. red says:

    Dean:

You’re the one who needs to lighten up.

Oh, and where exactly is the “gay community”? Can I visit it?
