I had to scroll all the way to the bottom of Wikipedia’s “June 16” page to find out what in the hell you’re talking about. You *are* a geek. :)

As a Sheila stalker, of course I know what this means, however there are two things that could make some geek think differently if their trivia knowledge is only tangential to the REAL event:
1) Juneteenth: to be honest I had to look it up to know which “teenth” this African-American holiday occurred. (I’m sure I’m gonna get hammered for not knowing this date, but I can’t know everything… despite what I tell my son)
2) Bloomsday is also a big deal in Spokane, Wa which occurs in May and has nothing to do with Joyce… In fact, when I read in some article that Bloomsday was celebrated on May 24 in Washington, I was shocked that Red had let the holiday come and gone without a post until I realized this was a DIFFERENT Bloomsday.
Here’s the thing and I may have commented on this before, Joyce is far too deep for me. I barely understood A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (even with the Cliffs Notes!… and this is from a guy that “got” The Sound and the Fury once it was explained via the same aid) let alone Ulysses and, obviously, Finnegans Wake…
Maybe it’s “an Irish thing”
JFH – ah yes, I understand. Many people have that response, and that’s fine.
However – a ton of the people who read me DO love Joyce and are crazy about him like I am – so June 16th is for them. (And for me, of course.)
As a matter of fact, a month ago some random person emailed me – someone who doesn’t comment here regularly but obviously has been reading me for years – and said, “Hope you’re planning something for Bloomsday!”
Yes! I am!!
Geekhood by osmosis…years ago I would have had no idea what you were talking about…now, though…I have developed yet another facet to my own already-present geekiness. Bring it on!

Even if I DIDN’T like Joyce (and he’s not at the top of my list, as much as I do enjoy him), the whole Bloomsday thing would be fun anyway.
Although sorry to say I won’t be in NYC yet again. Maybe next year!
Although I’ve still to read anything by Joyce, past Bloomsday celebrations on this blog have roused my curiosity; I have Ulysses on my bookshelves, waiting until I get the nerve to plunge into it. I will, eventually… In the meantime, I am looking forward to whatever it is that you have prepared for us this June 16, Sheila! As Jayne said: Bring it on!!! :)

(I’m sorry, but I will never tire of taking the piss out of that fool who gave you grief for writing about Joyce instead of Abu Ghraib or whatever. Like you were Nero fiddling while Rome burned or CNN ignoring the story or something.)
