Sinatra is trying to start a bit – trying to get everyone together – which is not easy, since Dino and Sammy are bopping around in the background, just doing lunatic shit on their own – so Frank is at the mike, Johnny Carson is beside him – and Frank is saying, “Sammy, come here a second ….”
Then you hear the audience start to howl, something is going on off camera, and then suddenly – Dino and Sammy come into the frame, and Dino is carrying Sammy in his arms. Dino goes right up to the mike and declares loudly, “I’D LIKE TO THANK THE NAACP FOR THIS WONDERFUL TROPHY …”

Please note Sammy’s drink and cigarette. Also note Sammy’s expression. hahahahaha

OMFG.
Awesome.
I know I read about the scene in your post from earlier in the week, but this just makes it. How can anyone not love these guys? With a capital “L” you know?
that is just too funny. I love that picture. I love that Sammy has a drink and a cigarette in his hand. And I love how effortless it looks for Dean to be carrying him.
where is the Rat Pack of the current generation? Why are there not people with this level of cool working now?
ricki – well, the world of show business that these guys inhabited (the world of small intimate clubs where anything goes) no longer exists. It’s not that there aren’t people who are that cool working now (I know many of them personally) – it’s just that the venues no longer exist, Vegas is now for families and is all G-rated, and that whole scene of nightclubs no longer exists. Huge loss.
Bless you for finding that screen cap, Sheila. That is tremendous. Dean just looks so deadpan and unfunny, it makes everything else even better. He knows better than to give anything away. Even Frank – that’s just the perfect “Hey, Dino’s carrying Sammy around. …the hell?!?”
In about two seconds, everyone is going to be rolling on the floor. This is the perfect quiet instant beforehand.
Nightfly – I love how you can see a couple dudes in the orchestra in the background – and even THEY are about to start rolling. Hysterical!!!!
Hey Shelia pallie, thanks for keepin’ the Dinogroove goin’ Dinogirl…..you’re addin’ to our Dinoeducation and Dinopleasure at the same Dinotime!!!!
Sheila — I found your site due to the common Dino and Cary Grant pages. I just love picture choices and commentary. (I’ll get around to the other pages if my Dino and CG obsessions ever leave room for anything else!)
Great pic here. It’s a great show, this one.
Nightfly has a great comment about Dean’s deadpanning being one of the keys to his extraordinary comic talent. It always cracks me up to see Frank trying to be funny. Frank deadpans… but his delivery just never makes it. I don’t think the man ever made laugh. Well, to be fair, that’s not true. When Sinatra would play the young kid against, say, Gene Kelly in Anchors Aweigh and On the Town, he could get the young & innocent chuckle just fine.
As to why this sort of group doesn’t exist now — I think it’s the honesty that comes through — these guys are performing for fun with each other as much as for the audience. I don’t think we see that now. Egos and publicists probably don’t leave room for that luxury.
Sheila –thanks for sharing your great site. I’m never surprised to see Dean Lovers turn out to be Cary Lovers and vice versa. I have only seen a couple of pictures of the two of them together — and footage only from Franks (60th?) Birthday where they are performing for the same person (Cary leads the Happy Birthday song at the end). However, I imagine that the two of them had a deep understanding of one another and nothing but the highest respect for each other as well. And if I’m wrong — I don’t want to know it.
Happy Thoughts!
