Soundtrack shuffle

I’ve seen this at Tracey’s – here’s mine. There is much that I find amusing here. The song that came up for “Final Battle” for example made me laugh out loud. And I find the song that came up for “Falling in Love” pretty damn … well, whatever. I also very much enjoy the soundtrack choice for me “waking up”. Bwahahaha.

IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?

So, here’s how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that’s playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don’t lie and try to pretend you’re cool…

Opening Credits: You Can’t Always Not Get What You Don’t Want – Tracy Bonham

Waking Up: Dirty Old Egg-Suckin’ Dog – Johnny Cash

First Day At School: Break of Dawn – Stevie Wonder

Falling In Love: Waiting – Green Day

Fight Song: Peaches and Cream – Domestic Science Club (a more girlie song cannot be imagined. It’s hilarious imagining some big fight with this song playing in the background)

Breaking Up: Praying for Time – George Michael

Prom: Joseph’s Dream – Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat soundtrack (I am SURE that this is quite a popular prom theme. Imagine all the high schoolers slow dancing to the romantic strains of:

“Joseph’s coat annoyed his brothers
But what makes us mad
Are the things he often tells us
Of the dreams he often had …”

Yeah. Really common prom theme song.)

Life: A Sleepin’ Bee – Barbra Streisand

Mental Breakdown: The Meeting Place – XTC

Driving: The Wonder of You – Elvis Presley

Flashback: Down In the Meadow – Marilyn Monroe

Getting Back Together: Wig In a Box – Hedwig and the Angry Inch soundtrack

Wedding: Free Your Mind – En Vogue

Birth of Child: 18 Miles from Memphis – Stray Cats

Final Battle: I Think I’ll Join a Cult – Pat McCurdy

Death Scene: Silhouettes – The Nylons

Funeral Song: She Loves Me Not – Closer Than Ever soundtrack

End Credits: From the Morning – Nick Drake

    “THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT I’M A PROS-TITUTE OH NO …’

Yes, that was our first dance as a married couple. Awesome.

  3. PatrickP says:

I did this and my Death Scene is Georgy GirlIt’s a Fine Day by Opus III, and for the end credits, by The Carpenters.

Oh, and my life song is It’s New to You by the Bugaloos.

  4. PatrickP says:

That should say Georgy Girl by the Seekers. And We’ve Only Just Begun by the Carpenters. Not sure what happened there.

  5. mitchell says:

  6. red says:

Mitchell – you are NOT going to see Babs. Are you serious???

Holy shit. I have to hear everything.

  7. Erik says:

Oooo I love ipod game this too. (And your prom lyrics made me guffaw.) Here’s mine:

Opening Credits: What A Piece of Work is Man — from the Hair Soundtrack (kinda heavyhanded way to open my movie, but okay)

Waking Up: Standing — sung by Giles, from the Buffy the Vampire musical episode soundtrack (ha–the opening line of the song is “You’re not ready for the world outside…”)

First Day At School: Please Mr. Postman — sung by The Carpenters (fun and peppy, makes me wanna go to school, i’ll buy it)

Falling In Love: Wait — by Get Set Go (dammit, sample lyric: “and you will wait too long, he will be gone, he will be gone…”)

Fight Song: Because We Can — by Fatboy Slim (from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack) (I could TOTALLY see this as a Fight Song) (lots of high kicks)

Breaking Up: The Blue Wrath — by I Monster (this is a kinda surreal upbeat peppy song on acid, if this is my breakup song I can only imagine the breakup is followed by a long drinking montage at the local bar)

Prom: Baby Don’t Forget My Number — by Milli Vanilli (wow, this is an AWESOME prom song. I mean, it would be a realllly weird prom song, but it makes me want to dance.)

Life: I’m Every Woman — by Chaka Khan (I’m not touching this one.)

Mental Breakdown: Precious — by The Pretenders (okay)

Driving: Baby I Need Your Loving — by Was Not Was (I must be driving after the guy who broke my heart earlier who I waited to long for.)

Flashback: Sugar Boy — by Beth Orton (ahhh, so melancholy)

Getting Back Together: The New Pollution — by Beck (okay, this works ‘cuz it’s totally happy, but “the new POLLUTION??!?” that doesn’t bode well.)

Wedding: I Don’t Want To Say Goodbye — by Teddy Thompson (very slow-danceable, but it’s kind of a sad first dance)

Birth of Child: Peace Train — by Richie Havens (yeah, this works for the birth scene, especially since it’ll be more of an adoption scenario) (this is actually perfect, i like this song choice.)

Final Battle: Dedicated Follower of Fashion — by The Kinks (this is really funny to imagine fighting to)

Death Scene: I’m Waiting For The Man — covered by David Bowie (hmmm)

Funeral Song: Amy Hit the Atmosphere — by The Counting Crows (this one is too on the noise, I’m annoyed at the music supervisor during this scene)

End Credits: My Conviction — from the Hair soundtrack (that’s really weird that my personal soundtrack both started and ended with songs from the Hair soundtrack, I swear i didn’t cheat.)

  8. Erik says:

“I love ipod game this too”

    huh?

  9. Jeff says:

I’d pay to go see this movie:

Opening Credits – Think For Yourself – The Beatles

Waking Up: Human – The Human League

First Day At School – Zannalee – Prince (better hide the little girls)

Falling In Love: Every Little Bit – Patty Griffin (well, this is one relationship doomed from the start)

Fight Song: Blue Christmas – Elvis Presley (boy I must be really messed up)

Breaking Up: Love Should – Moby (Bellevue, here we come)

Prom: You’re Gonna Lose That Gril (oh oh, I feel another fight coming on)

Life: Lunch With Gina – Steely Dan

Mental Breakdown: Prison Grove – Warren Zevon (not a romantic comedy, obviously)

    Driving: Happy Home – Garbage

Flashback: Jackie, Dressed in Cobras – The New Pornographers

Getting Back Together: See The Sun – Dido (hey, one that actually works!)

Wedding: Soak Up The Sun – Sheryl Crow

Birth of Child: Cotton Fields – Creedence Clearwater Revival

Final Battle: When God Made Me – Neil Young
(must be one slow moving battle)

Death Scene: Sky Blue and Black – Jackson Browne (oooh…creepy)

Funeral Song: Christmastime – Smashing Pumpkiins (Happy Holidays!)

End Credits: Someday Baby – Bob Dylan

  10. red says:

I am laughing so hard reading both of your soundtracks, Eric and Jeff – and your comments! hahaha!!

  11. red says:

Jeff – I freakin’ love Patty Griffin, by the way – especially the album that that song comes off of. Not a happy album – but I think every song is pretty damn near perfect.

  12. Jeff says:

I love that album too, but my favorite of hers is “1000 Kisses” – which I think is one of the few perfect albums in existence. Almost five years after it was released, it seems like I notice something new every time it’s on.

  13. red says:

    Yeah – that’s a terrific album.

Isn’t it the one made possible by Dave Matthews buying her out of her way too restrictive recording contract and letting her do her own thing on his label??

I think I read something about that. I’m not a huge Dave Matthews fan but I love him for that, if it’s true.

  14. Jeff says:

I think that is true – more evidence that record company executives are weasels. I’ve also read that the songs on “Living With Ghosts” were actually demos made for album that she made with producer Daniel Lanois, but decided not to release because she thought it was more “Lanois” than “Griffin.”

  15. red says:

Jeff – really! I had no idea! That felt like SUCH a personal album to me.

Not wacky about “Flaming Red” – the next album – although the song “Tony” has the power to bring me to tears. Do you know that song?

  16. Jeff says:

That is a great song; no doubt about it. I don’t listen to that album a lot – there’s several great songs, but again you can tell that the record company was trying to make her into something that she wasn’t. You can almost imagine the conversation: “well, the acoustic one didn’t sell that well, let’s turn her into a rocker!”

Check out the version on her live album, “A Kiss In Time.” It’s the definitive one (as are the versions of the other songs from “Flaming Red.”).

  17. red says:

I don’t have her live album – wow, thanks for the tip.

Have you ever seen a concert of hers? I never have – but I’m so curious about what she’s like.

  18. red says:

And I so agree with you about that album. It’s just not “her” – it’s so obvious.

  19. Jeff says:

No, I’ve never seen her live – she doesn’t make it out to California that often. She’s recording a new album now, so maybe next year…

  20. red says:

I’d love to see her live – I need to keep my ear to the ground for tours in the New England area.

  21. kathy says:

    Opening Credits: Driver 8 – R.E.M.

Waking Up: Goodbye – Steve Earle (sad start!)

First Day At School: Tongue – R.E.M. (how creepy!)

Falling In Love: Jacksonville – Sufjan Stevens

Fight Song: When I went Down in the Valley to Pray – Dry Branch Fire Squad

Breaking Up: Maybe – Allison Krauss & Union Street Station

Prom: Save it for a Rainy Day – The Jayhawks

Life: Fifteen Keys – Uncle Tupelo

Mental Breakdown: If I had a Boat – Lyle Lovett (my mental breakdown will be whimsical)

Flashback: Time After Time – Eva Cassidy (perfect)

Getting Back Together: Life in a Northern Town – The Dream Academy

Wedding: Red Clay Halo – Gillian Welch

Final Battle: Rock of Ages – Gillian Welch

Death Scene: Time is on my side – Irma Thomas (my death scene will be played for laughs)

Funeral Song: Tampa to Tulsa – The Jayhawks

End Credits: Love Me – Elvis Presley (Woo-hoo! I love this one.)

  22. red says:

    //my mental breakdown
    will be whimsical//

hahahahahaha The best kind of breakdow is full of whimsy!

  23. kathy says:

Yes, after a rough start, my life movie is looking pretty goofy!

  24. Ann Marie says:

I don’t have an iPod, but Rick got one recently and loaded it up evidently with a lot of classic country. So here’s his. I really love the Final Battle one and the Death one:

Opening Credits: I don’t Believe You – The Magnetic Fields
Waking Up: The Cry from The Cross – The Stanley Brothers.
First Day At School: No More Waiting – Rick Vamos

Death Scene: I Wish it Had been a Dream – Louvin Brothers
Funeral Song: Walking the Floor over You – Ernest Tubb
End Credits: Sweet Sacrifice – Evanescence

  25. dorkafork says:

I got a lousy shuffle. The only remotely interesting ones were:

Waking up: Theme from the ’60s TV show “Secret Agent”, British version. (Pretty dramatic.)
Getting back together: The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Death Scene: incidental music from the original Star Trek TV show

Also, I am apparently having a Miami Vice wedding. Pastel tuxedo, baby!

  26. Jen says:

Um, so I just did mine…it was totally freaky. I got “Simple Kind of Life” by No Doubt for the Break Up song, “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley for the Mental Breakdown song, “Toxic” by Britney Spears for fight song, and “Don’t Come Around Here No More” by Tom Petty for funeral song. HAHAHAHA
