It is Petula Clark’s 74th birthday. And Annika is all over it. Keep scrolling.
Annika also asked me to write something for the Petula Fest. Which I happily did. It was my honor to participate.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Petula!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Petula!
Petula Clark. That’s a quite a name, isn’t it?
Does it amaze anyone else that “Downtown” has never been covered by a popular artist since??!
Really?!
Seriously?? I totally would have thought someone like Dionne Warwick would have done it or something … it’s such a good song!
I have been heard to sing it in the shower many times. Now, I’m not sure I qualify as “popular” or “artist”(sincerely doubt it), and I have yet to record a performance, but I have my own “take” on the material.
I used to love Petula Clark when I was a boy. The two videos with Dean Martin that Annika posted were like eating a great candy bar from your childhood that they don’t make anymore.
love it!! hey ..who is Annika???? she seems very very cool…is she a cousin???
Mitchell – i thought you would love that … annika is a blog-friend – I’ve actually never met her! But every wednesday she does a poetry day thing which is really fun – so she decided to combine the ONE poem that petula wrote with a celebration of petula’s birthday – I love that!!!
Whoops, I was wrong, Dolly Parton covered it in 1984, but for some reason, I don’t remember that…
Dearest: your Aunt Regina was in Blood Brothers on Broadway with Petula Clark. As I recall, Regina thought she was wonderful. will you be home for Thanksgiving? love, dad
Dad – I remember!! I remember going to see it – it was so great!
And yes – I’ll be home! I’ll call you guys tonight – I want to hear about LA.
JFH – she did?? I’ll have to check it out – I have her Greatest Hits but that one isn’t on it, I don’t think.
Sheila, that was a delightful post!
Thanks, Victor! It was fun to write it.
And the snippets that Annika found – especially the ones from the Dean Martin show – are priceless!!
Ooooh, Sheila’s going to RI for Thanksgiving! I look forward to the “my trip to RI and the craziness that ensued while in transit” post. Please take trhe train, Sheila. Please take the train!!
Shoot! More corrections… The B-53’s covered this song on their debut album (1980), don’t remember that either! Ironically, the release of the album was held up because the song’s writer wasn’t sure that a new wave recording of the song was appropriate…
Patrick – HA!
NO. NEVER AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN!!
I say “never again” every year and then I always end up on that stupid train.
