Quotes from a movie we love (just watched it again tonight):
“I … I … I truly dislike that chair.”
“There’ve been a series of burglaries.”
“Don Juan … fucking Don Juan.”
“Metabolically it’s not my rhythm.” (and the funniest part about that moment – is his response to it: “I understand.”)
“What’s the rush.”
I have more favorite moments … but these just came up again as evidene of Judy Davis’ utter brilliance. She’s one of my favorite actresses.
“Metabolically it’s not my rhythm.” (it needs to be said again)
“DON’T DEFEND YOUR SEX.”
Guess the movie anyone? (Anyone who’s not Mitchell, I mean)
And Mitchell – please remind me of some of your favorite moments. I saw SO MUCH in this last viewing of it.
“Your ASSHOLE ASSHOLE ASSHOLE FRIENDS!”
“Let’s go get some Mexican.”
“Oh yeah! I’m crazy for cous cous!”
“Hey man. Be careful. I’m serious about her.” (Ya are?)
“So she’s not Simone de Beauvoir!”
The Ref?
No – but you are VERY close.
Husbands and Wives??
yes!!!!
I remember one moment when someone asks Judy Davis what she wants to drink and she says “white wine” with such brittleness, like she’s wound up SO tight that it’s absolutely hysterical.
Isn’t there also a scene where Sydney Pollack’s girlfriend talks about endolphins?
only mere days til you come to Chicago!!
You’re coming to Chicago? For how long? :-)
kate – yeah, that whole date scene which descends into her shouting at him DON’T DEFEND YOUR SEX is so damn brilliant – that poor man!!! Judy Davis is so amazing.
and actually – the endolphins line (hahaha) is from Postcards – with Annette Benning – “I’m in it for the endolphin rush.” “Endorphins.” Pause. “Whatever.”
But yeah – sidney pollack’s girlfriend is SO FUNNY – trying to convince these intellectuals at the party that the placement of the planets have EVERYTHING to do with their lives. That actress is so perfect for that part. “You guys, you’re all so smart, I don’t understand how you can’t realize that the placement of the planets is crucial – like I would never put a scorpio with a libra …” etc. And sidney pollack’s mortified PISSED face.
and yes – chicago!!! I heard you guys had just a weeeeee bit of snow, huh? just a tiny bit.
up until 2 days ago it was 65 degrees here. bah!! can’t wait to see you!
I just saw Woody’s “Celebrity” for the first time and thought Judy Davis completely stole the show. Her performance in the sequence where she gets “lessons” from Bebe Neuwirth was almost too funny to watch.
It’s SO COLD HERE!!! Bring every layering piece you can. And have a safe trip!
65 degrees is usually around the temperature where everyone in L.A. starts complaining about how “cold” it is. We are a metropolis of weather wimps.
I don’t k now, emily. y’all deal with earthquakes… you may not handle cold well, but if the earth ever quaked here, you’d see a bunch of people lose their minds. It’d be like New ORleans with soy beans instead of flood waters.
Sheil..that movie prompted ur viscious imitation of Mia Farrow constantly touching her face…she’s great..but ur imitation is even better…also it was during that movie..a matinee at the Warwick Mall Cinema in Rhody..that i turned to Wendy Feller and said “if anyone every plays Judy Garland in a movie ..it HAS to be Judy Davis”..and lo and behold she eventually and miraculously did! Kate is sooo right..there is a brittleness to Ms. Davis’ performance that is irresistable!!!..and speaking of Kate..i get to meet baby Nathan on wed….soo psyched!!
Mia Farrow – coming out of the kitchen with that huge bowl of pasta for Liam Neeson – member that part? Like: hon. Stop hovering. It’s not even in the dialogue – it’s all in her WAY of coming out of the kitchen – and what it says about her.
She smothers him to death.
I always feel bad for that character the most – he’s the one who’s the real victim in the story. Everybody else chooses their destiny – but he gets caught.
he’s so good.
Hot, too.
On “The Ben Stiller Show” from the 90s, they did a takeoff on Husbands and Wives once substituting all the characters for movie monsters. Woody Allen as the Mummy, Sydney Pollack as Frankenstein’s monster, etc., but still all having angst-filled relationship discussions. Anyway, Amy Stiller played the Judy Davis character as the Bride of Frankenstein. She nailed Davis’s mannerisms so well I thought it was the funniest part of the sketch.
