Annie Frisbie fills out the movie meme at her Film Review site. (Annie is awesome, by the way – a kindred spirit – she’s also “super fast reader” – and contributes reviews at House Next Door – her latest is here)
But it’s great to read other people’s answers to this meme. I love that she loves watching Mildred Pierce with someone who hasn’t seen it before. I love that she agrees with me on Robert Wuhl. hahaha It is good to have it validated. And I too love 8 Mile with a passion.
Here are my answers by the way.
And here are Lisa’s answers. I had forgotten about Mos Def – and I totally agree.
And here are SarahK’s answers. Lovers of Walk to Remember – UNITE!! (I rant and rave about my love for that movie here – despite how much I DESPISE Nicholas Sparks’ books, which I believe we have covered on the ol’ blog before.)
hey sheil, if you ever get a chance, take a look at the Robert Wuhl special where he is teaching a US history class. ever caught this? being a history freak AND hating Robert Wuhl, i know that you will take perverse pleasure in this double feature.
he won some kind of lottery. he makes me cringe just looking at him. but then he starts to talk with that ‘i’m always about to say something that will crack me up so i’m holding it back but your madcap laughter is making it hard for me’ attitude, i get downright angry. and the old ‘i get stuttery and head-move-y when i’m angry or embarrassed’ takes amateur acting to new lows.
he’s like a pompous insecure frog who watched ‘rebel without a cause’ too many times and had to focus on james dean because to acknowledge sal mineo might lead to MADNESS!!!
bren – ha – no, I never caught it.
Mitchell and I lived with a guy in Chicago who literally got angry when he thought about Robert Wuhl having a career. It was hysterical to get him going. Like, “Hey Ken … whaddya think of Robert Wuhl??”
Tommy Lee Jones was awesome in Cobb (not a good movie – but a good performance) – but Robert Wuhl pretty much ruins it for me.
And I agree, Bren – he won some kind of lottery. I completely do not get why he EVER gets jobs.
::whisper::I thought he was funny in Bull Durham::/whisper::
hahahaha whispering …
“Okay, well, uh… candlesticks always make a nice gift, and uh, maybe you could find out where she’s registered and maybe a place-setting or maybe a silverware pattern. Okay, let’s get two! Go get ’em.”
BTW, I saw that (HBO?) history lesson by Wuhl that your brother mentioned. I counted at least 2 urban legends (that is if you could count popular historical falacies as “urban legends”) in his lecture. I guess it’s okay to feed bad history to college students as long as they’re entertained while learning.
Actually, Edward C. just put up a really fun post about actors who are “nails on a chalkboard” to him (knowing that everybody gets huffy and defensive in response) – but the point isn’t to get a consensus, the point is to start discussion, and for Edward to describe WHY certain actors drive him crazy.
Here’s the post. Fun stuff (and also good comments – he’s got good and funny commenters)
Meaning: Robert Wuhl is nails on a chalkboard to me.
For example – over there one of the commenters said that Mark Lynn-Baker “made me want to light myself on fire.” hahahaha
I love that. I know that pain.
Bull Durham is the exception but that is in no way attributable to his performance. The filmmakers merely used his annoying presence wisely. Anytime he is supposed to be something other than a grating idiot, he becomes…a GRATING IDIOT.
I really like his take on Kevin Cosner, a guy given great roles and with great writing made his career on the backs of very talented people
JFH – yeah, I thought his analysis of the downfall of Costner was very good! He could kind of HIDE for a while because he got cast in good things, big huge hits … but once that was gone? The jig is up!
Hey Bren – did you see Cobb?
Speaking of Costner – it makes me laugh because there’s that line in Field of Dreams when Shoeless Joe makes a joke about not inviting Ty Cobb to the magic field “cause none of us liked the son of a bitch when he was alive”!
And the movie Cobb is kind of like that – Ty Cobb was just so unpleasant – but Tommy Lee Jones was great. Robert Wuhl was supposed to be this interested eager reporter interviewing him – and it was just too bad, because they have all these long 2 way scenes – and it was just bad. Wuhl hadn’t had a part that BIG – and he was just way out of his league. Especially opposite the force of nature that was Tommy Lee JOnes.
I’m surprised they didn’t fire him.
Or – did anyone else see Cobb?
It’s not a very good movie – and Cobb is such an asshole that sometimes you’re like: Uhm, when will this movie end? – but Jones is great in it.
I’ve never done a post on Tommy Lee Jones and what I love about him – and I really should, one of these days.
YEEEESSSS! You should! I would LOVE to read that.
Ohmigod, LORI PETTY! I haaaaaaaaaate her. Kudos, Eddieonfilm!
I wouldn’t go so far as to say I really like Robert Wuhl… but I have to confess that I have always thought he had this whole creepy but endearing oddball thing going on…
I put my list up, Sheila (couldn’t resist) and the person I can’t stand is Colin Farrell.
Enjoyed the Edward C. link – ow I’m trying to think what my own comprehensive nails on chalkboard list would be… But you know I actually have this whole love hate thing going on with kevin Costner and usually avoid films he’s in – but I LOVE Field of Dreams.
Marisa – hahahaha I absolutely adore Field of Dreams too. It’s one of my all-time faves. The love-hate relationship goes on.
Speaking of Field of Dreams and Cobb, I found this story a few years ago(Cobb/Shoeless):
SOMETIME IN THE LATE 1940S Ty Cobb and sportswriter
Grantland Rice stopped off at a liquor store in Greenville,
South Carolina, on their way back from the Masters Golf
tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
Cobb greeted the heavyset man behind the counter. I
know you, he said. Youre Joe Jackson. Dont you know
me, Joe? I came by especially to say hello.
I know you, said the man behind the counter, but I
wasnt sure you wanted to speak to me. A lot of them
dont.
Sad, so sad…
JFH – wow. so sad.
On the bright side, we’ve got a statue now for Shoeless Joe:
Statue
and we’ve moved his house next to the new baseball stadium, which as you’ll be happy to know, being the Red Sox Single A (lower level) team,is a mini Fenway Park:
