Letters

The following exchange of letters pleased me so much.

Groucho Marx to E.B. White

EB White’s response

How much do I want to join those two for cocktails and see what they talk about!!?

It’s not only funny, the writing is just tremendous! That meeting would make a great short story – huh, Sheila? Huh?
    So, how about “Reds Night?”

The trouble with reading letters like these is I wind up always asking myself, ‘Why can’t I be that cool?’

  3. red says:

Ted – welcome back! I can’t wait to hear EVERYthing about your trip to the island of Erin.

Reds night – yes!! This week is shot – what about next week? Or … say – this next Sunday??

Please be prepared to listen to me babble about Dean Stockwell ad infinitum. I will certainly TRY to let you get a word in edgewise. A lot has transpired since you have taken your trip. I am all Stockwell all the time. I can’t even re-trace my steps but I do believe it has something to do with Long Day’s Journey.

    Have you seen Compulsion??

  4. red says:

George- hahaha I know what you mean.

  5. D says:

right on george! i imagine them wearing smoking jackets and someone mixing rarified martinis all the while they are spouting such pithiness

  6. Ted says:

Yeah, I’m loving the Stockwell obsession it’s, well, passionate. I’ve seen him in stuff but he’s been off my radar until your focused campaign to catapult him to the place he no doubt deserves. You have me interested in checking out some of his films. I’ll try to track down Compulsion – is that a good place to start?
I’ll check the calendar and email you re reds (and greens)!

//your focused campaign to catapult him to the place he no doubt deserves//

hahahahahahaha That is EXACTLY my motive!!!

Compulsion, for me, has been the surprise of this obsession. I’ve seen most of his movies – and he’s always great (hell, he’s great in his couple of scenes in Air Force One) –

He reminds me of Sam (at least now, as an old man) … there’s something about him that is very Sam-like, that bitterness, the intelligence, the humor – he doesn’t seem to give a crap – and he seems likeable but he’s also nobody’s fool EVER.

But I was really taken with his work in Compulsion. I had never seen it before.

Most people don’t know that the “E” in E.B. White’s name stands for Erudite (of course the B as everyone knows stands for “Bad-Ass Writer”)
