Just read your review. Wow.
Yeah, it’s a nice light farce. :)
Sheila,
Once again I must thank you for such an insightful review. Your writing about the film inspires me to go out of my way to see it. I have always been impressed by Juliette Binoche. Such quivering vulnerability, such sensuality, such intensity, and such truth as an actress are so rare, and she has them in spades. And how nicely you draw everything together at the end of your essay! Well done, and a pleasure to read!
Robert – thanks so much! We are in total agreement about Binoche’s gifts. I also love the integrity of her career. She honestly seems to do whatever the hell she wants to do – I really respect that.
Thanks again!
I think, as you say, honesty is the key word there. As a person and as an actress she seems totally honest — so much so that her characterizations seem utterly authentic. There is so much thought and feeling going on under the surface, and I love when I can see that in an actor just in the eyes, facial expressions, and body language. I have no idea what she is like as a person in real life, but I sure admire her work.
Have you seen Certified Copy? It’s one of my favorite movies in recent years. I’ve seen it three times thus far, and own it. She’s a miracle in it. The whole film is a miracle.
I, too, have zero idea what she’s like in real life. I don’t know anything about her. I’m sure I could find out, but I don’t want to. She’s one of those giant stars who remains somewhat anonymous. Her focus is on the right things. The work.
I think you’re right. Anonymity is probably best. Disillusion is all too often the result of looking too deeply into people. The work IS the most important thing, as you say…. but wouldn’t you still like to have someone with a few of her apparent attributes in your circle of friends?
Haven’t seen Certified Copy, but it’s on my Netflix queue. Tonight, though, I’ll be diving in to another of your recommendations — Opening Night, with the Cassavetes crew. I don’t know how I missed it.
Thrilled you’re going to see Opening Night.
Hello, darling! Exquisitely written as always, my friend. I look forward to seeing this.
Just wanted to take a moment to wish you “HAPPY BLOG BIRTHDAY” tomorrow! I cannot even comprehend how many hours of joy you’ve brought me and the legion of readers who are privileged to visit here. It’s my daily dose of insight, my connection to a kindred spirit, my reminder that there’s hope for the future. You’re a shimmering star in the blogosphere firmament. I love you. xxx Stevie
Stevie – My God, you amaze me. October 18! My anniversary! Had totally forgot!!
Love you!! It’s been so great to ‘see’ you a couple of times recently. Does my heart good.
