— No way around it. These glasses help elevate the mood. I like to wear them in a blasé manner out in public as though nothing is weird or wrong. Very hard to feel that life is a gloomy affair when you look in the mirror and see THAT nonsense.
— Had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family. My sister is about to have her third baby, any day now, and it’s all very exciting. She’s pretty much over being pregnant at the moment, and I don’t blame her. Lucy and William know the new baby is coming although … yeah … I’m not sure they QUITE comprehend what it all will mean. But they’ll do great! I can’t wait to meet this new member of our family!
— Kept up my exercise regime while out of town. Took a great brisk walk along the sea wall, the ocean heaving along to my left, blinding in the sun. I love my hometown.
— I got some excellent presents for my birthday! My sister Jean bought me an amazing outfit (she’s incredible, fashion-wise – she should be someone’s personal shopper). My sister Siobhan sent me Anjelica Huston’s brand-new memoir, which I had been dying to read but hadn’t bought yet. I can’t wait!
— December is looking crazy busy. And there a couple of movies coming out that I cannot WAIT to see, Man of Hope being the main one. I feel like I’ve been waiting for that one for years!
— And finally:
My friend Kim posted this on her Facebook page. It is a clip of Tom Jones and Wilson Pickett singing “Hey Jude”. I have no words to describe the sensations/thoughts coursing through me watching these two men perform together. I have been trying to put it into words ever since I first saw it yesterday. But I throw up my hands in defeat, and then just press “Replay” yet again. I guess what I have to say is that these two guys, singing this song, are Joy Incarnate. There it is: that’s what Joy looks like.
Enjoy.

1. I love those glasses and that picture of you in them.
2. Yay for everything else.
The glasses are so excellent. They cheer me up!
Miss you – I owe you an email. xoxoxo
Love that video – still smiling! How did Wilson not blow out his vocal cords?! And Tom Jones is still such a crush.
Happy birthday! Here’s a link to Terry Gross’s interview with Anjelica, which I think you’ll enjoy:

I know – the screaming they do at the end!! So exciting, such chemistry between the two performers.
Thank you so much for the Anjelica link – will check it out! I know she grew up mainly in Ireland and I am very curious to learn more about it. I’ve always loved her.
Thank you Sylvia!
Love Tom Jones and Wilson Pickett sing Hey Jude. It felt like a mixture of being in church and finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!!
Also love the glasses!!
Jennchez – I agree that there is something Divine (literally) about what is going on between those two men in that performance!
Legend has it Sheila, that when Eric Clapton was sick of being Eric Clapton and was hanging with the crew that would end up being Derek and the Dominoes, he had heard the Pickett version of this song on the radio and was blown away by that little guitar solo right at the end. Of course he started asking around and finally was told it was the guy called “skydog” Duane Allman(given the nickname because he was always high allegedly). Aside from being in the Allman Brotheres ,Duane was a very much in demand session player on a lot of the Muscle Shouls recordings. The engineer Tom Dowd knew both guys and set up a session with both of them that turned into “Layla” with those beautiful dueling guitars. Dowd later said something along the lines of the chords these guys were playing were literally off the charts. That’s obviously Duane on this video as well. Nice one.
Dg – wow!!! Thank you for that!
