Review: Child’s Pose (2014): Romania’s Oscar Entry

I’ve been watching the films coming out of Romania over the last 10 years with growing excitement. There’s a “New Wave” going on there right now, amazing films, social, political, spiritual, sometimes harrowing (4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days), sometimes ironic and ridiculous (12:08 East of Bucharest = My thoughts here). And then, of course, there was Beyond the Hills, one of the best films from last year. At least it’s on my Top 10. (My thoughts on that horrifying film here.)

Child’s Pose won the Silver Bear at the Berlinale, and is also Romania’s Oscar entry in the foreign category. It is a hell of a film, and features an amazing performance by its lead actress, Luminita Gheorghiu. If you’ve been following Romanian film, you will know her face. What a phenomenal actress.

Child’s Pose opens today in the United States in limited release. I recommend you seek it out.

My review of Child’s Pose is now up at Roger Ebert.
