Review: The Wind Rises (2014); directed by Hayao Miyazaki

“The Wind Rises” is the latest from beloved Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki (it’s nominated for an Oscar) and Miyazaki has also announced it will be his final feature.

I saw the version that was in Japanese with English subtitles. There is also a dubbed version, with American actors doing the voices. So pick your poison, both are out there. Either way, you should see it.

My review is now up at Roger Ebert.

Looking forward to seeing this one, so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it. I found his last one (From Up On Poppy Hill) a little disappointing.

      Yes, me too.

This is beautiful, nostalgic, and, at times, really really sad. Gorgeous! And anyone mechanically-minded will probably love it too – lots of scenes of constructing airplanes.

The Landmark Sunshine (a theatre here in NYC) does midnight movies every Friday night – and they’re doing a Miyazaki series for the next month. If it weren’t so past my bed-time, I’d go check it out – a midnight Miyazaki movie with only die-hard lovers of his films? Sounds like a blast!

It does sound awesome – I’d love to see Miyazaki on the big screen.
