Ragtime

I love old sheet music. I love browsing through the online collection at the Library of Congress. I grew up in a Scott Joplin-loving household. We had all his sheet music (still do) and I can still play parts of “The Entertainer” by heart. I remember my parents allowing my brother and me to stay up past our bedtime as kids to see two movies: What’s Up, Doc? and The Sting. Good taste, Mum and Dad!

Anyway, here are some images I pulled from the Library of Congress’ ragtime collection. Not sure what it is I love about these … perhaps it’s the cameo appearances of Gibson girls, the glimpse into history, the fact I know some of these songs … whatever it is. Beautiful, I think.

Yes, those ARE “way cool”. I think the attraction is the artistic representation. Not just a standard “Times New Roman 12” Font header centered on a white background.

Years back when I worked as a Cartographer I had the opportunity to review hundreds of old maps that had been archived at the State Library. I got the same feeling looking at these old “hand drawn” ink maps on linen. Often they would have various landscapes, scroll work and even cherubs on the borders and around the legends. True works of art (compared to the computerized GIS products we generate today).

I share your “attraction”, for whatever the reason…

    Love that!!

I love old maps, too. I have an old one of Ireland on my wall with mermaids and sea monsters at the edges coming up out of the Irish Sea – love it.

I took 8 years of piano lessons as a young girl so some of those covers look familiar to me too. In fact, I still have some at my parents house.

In keeping with the book excerpt today. I love this photo so much. Yum. One of my “happy place” posts was about Carole Lombard. Love that lady. So did he. Gable did eventually marry again (twice, actually!), but he had…
