Vintage posters

I’m not against progress. I love things like air conditioning and gay people not having to be in the closet and direct deposit. However, also enjoy wearing saddle shoes. I like stockings with seams. I think movies look better in black and white. I love men in hats. I think smoking can be sexy. I love to be called a “dame”.

Etc.

Which is why I love this site of vintage posters. I love the old travel posters (I mean, isn’t this awesome??) – but I also adore the old WPA posters, with public service announcements (it’s all syphillis all the time, apparently), and stuff like that. Here’s the page of WPA posters. And I used to have a lunchbox with this image on it. Where the hell did it go?

This one is particularly good, I think (or maybe, being so blind, I just relate to it):

I’ve long and secretly wished for a world with the aesthetics of the 50s and the progress of today.

Love it. And this one–so much shaming. Oh, the shame of it!

Sheila, do you watch “Mad Men”? (I don’t remember you mentioning it on your blog but forgive me if this is covered ground.) The early-60’s clothes, figures, men in hats, and relentless smoking are all beyond fabulous.

Love the vintage posters too, had that site already bookmarked but I hadn’t seen the poor Johnny one – very funny!

I’ve got this hanging in my office: http://www.keepcalmgallery.com/products/keep-calm-duck/

I’ll second the vote for Mad Men too, best show on TV right now. They’re showing a marathon on Sunday of the last season if anyone needs to get caught up (AMC).
