LM Montgomery on “Vanity Fair” by Thackeray

“I read it long ago … I did not like it then — probably because it hit some of my pet illusions too hard. I was too young. It takes a more mature mind than mine then to appreciate Thackeray. When I read it this winter, I wondered how I failed to see its charm before. Oh, that delightful Becky!”

Unlike Montgomery, I’ve loved Vanity Fair since the first rime I read it…hitting illusions, indeed.

Yeah, I loved it too when I first read it. I just liked her own observations about her differing experience with the book. Which says something about the development of her personality.

Reminded me of many books I’ve read more than once, and they almost seem like different books with each separate reading – because of the different life-baggage I bring to it.
