Revenge is a dish best served cold

Revenge is best when it doesn’t come immediately. If you work for an immediate result, ie: revenge, often it can come off as messy, or desperate, or like you are trying to win. Not a good impression.

But sometimes, if you wait long enough, revenge comes. And it is neat and perfect and you didn’t have to work for it at all.

Sometimes the universe is generous like that.

It’s important to pay attention to such moments. Don’t revel too long, because that can make you petty and past-ridden and thirsting for more blood. You don’t want to live there. A need for revenge has the potential to poison your life.

But you can certainly acknowledge that the score has been settled at last.

When I’ve reached sufficient age to put my life’s summation into book form, may I use this quote?

  2. red says:

    Tommy – ha!!! Of course!

  3. Bud says:

Tarantino got it right in the opening of “Kill Bill 1”: “Revenge is a dish best served cold.” As our world becomes increasingly unjust, we can still hope that those who deserve it, get their due. Sometimes the universe does provide.

Bud, I love that quote! Changed the post title to that line … so so true.

And I guess I don’t agree that our world is “becoming increasingly unjust” – I think it has always been that way.

  5. Bud says:

Sheila, Your point is well taken. Perhaps it’s the 24-hour news cycle, Internets, blogs, etc., that have enabled us to truly grasp the full breadth and depth of the injustice.

And I needn’t tell you about the widespread and growing cries for justice/revenge from the millions (billions?) that have been victimized by the myriad of injustices perpetrated in the recent past. There are countless dishes ready to be served up, ice cold!

  6. red says:

Well, like I said in my post – the perfect revenge only sometimes comes. You cannot expect it, and you might wait forever. You need to not focus on revenge, in general. Most other times, though, it’s just shit luck, and you have to suck up, be pissed, defocus, repress, or try to let it go. Pick your poison. I am most definitively NOT of the mind that “everything happens for a reason” and I think some things flat out just suck. Period.

But sometimes … sometimes … the scale is balanced out. Again, just for a MOMENT – so you need to be cognizant enough to recognize that it has happened, revel for a second or two, and then move the fuck on.

Of course, I’m talking on a personal level here, not global or political.

I’m not talking about Shiites wanting revenge for what happened in the 3rd century. I’m talking about interpersonal types of revenge right now.

I just experienced a moment of that kind of revenge and it is very very sweet indeed.

    It only took 7 years!

  11. Revenge, part 2

I love the universe. She provides. Aside from my personal moment of revenge from this morning (which really isn’t a huge deal, it was just a sweet moment of symmetry where I felt vaguely vindictive and satisfied, like a dictator…
