okay, you’ve hit me. the eagles were my absolute favorite band for the first 15 years of my life (well, maybe they weren’t around for the first few, but who remembers those?)
when they did the ‘hell freezes over’ tour, i went to see them at giants stadium with one of my oldest friends. overall, i did not like the show: i hate when these old guys get together and need another whole band with them on stage to make the music. i also hate stadium shows in general.
but then they played this song. i hadn’t heard it in at least a decade, but i remembered it well, because from the time i was 12 i had memorized every nuance of the hotel california album, including all the scratches and pops in the vinyl. and it was as if someone turned on a spigot behind my eyes. suddenly i was just standing there, listening, with buckets of tears streaming down my face.
damn you sheila!!
Henley knows a thing or two.
“The shadows come to stay.”
That line always haunted me.
But of course what always blew me away about this song was the hope at the end…the maybe, even if it was just a maybe.
“Sometimes to keep it together you’ve got to leave it alone.”
I always thought that was the great underrated song of Hotel California.
They sure know how to write a song, don’t they? It really captures the despair, but also the hope. Thanks for reminding me of it.
