The strip-tease scene in “Slap Shot” that launched the fantasy-lives of many young people, male and female, who were way too young to be watching that movie anyway.
I love him as an actor, and I am glad Twin Peaks exists because we got to see so much of him so consistently. And he had such a warm openness in that role, a vulnerability mixed with intelligence. I love that character.
But Slap Shot is where it all started for me. I love that nasty foul-mouthed offensive gorgeous gritty movie.
Now that’s some old time hockey.
Hockey Burlesque. With jock straps.
Braden, you gotta learn to put out more, you know what I mean?
Braden’s wife might be my favorite. What a head-case. But she’s fabulous.
I LOVE all of the women of Slap Shot.
“They brought their fucking TOYS with them.”
Just watched the clip. And it’s very lovely. (And, paraphrasing one of the youtube comments, thank you, Mrs Ontkean.)
Does this happen at every ice hockey match, she asked, hopefully?
Only one time! The rest is just one big bloody brawl. Overseen by Paul Newman at his most glamorous/gritty/cranky/offensive, in a leather coat with a fur collar.
I didn’t realize Ontkean went to UNH where my cousins (and sister) went. He was a big hockey star there.
and lots of tight plaid pants.
My pal Kim wrote a gorgeous essay about Slap Shot when Paul Newman died.

“She’s just scrappin’!”
Yes, Lindsay Crouse is great as Lily Braden and let’s hear it for Jennifer Warren as Newman’s ex. She was so good here and in NIGHT MOVES. She knows she’s outgrown Dunlop (and he knows it too), but she can’t help but have affection for him.
How about the fashion show?
Jennifer Warren is great. She’s a real grown-up. The women here are not manic pixie girl-women. They are adults. As messed up as the men, but in many ways, they are more grown-up too. They love their men, but God, their men drive them crazy. Of course. These guys are head-cases. Also one of Newman’s other girls who’s now a lesbian – his reaction to that is so funny. Sort of … intrigued … embarrassed … maybe a TINY bit insulted (“what … my dick wasn’t enough for you?” kind of thing) … but overall, it’s a kind reaction.
Hard to picture a similar moment in a sports movie today.
… or any movie, for that matter.
Toe Blake! Eddie Shore!
Love that movie.
The local AHL team (the Lake Erie Monsters) have three guys they call the Mullet Brothers as part of the in-game entertainment; the look is based on the Hanson Brothers.
On kind of a side note, if there’s a minor league hockey (or baseball) team near you, do yourselves the favor, the great favor. Many of these franchises put on a heck of an entertaining experience for not a lot of money. Heck, Canal Park in downtown Akron (home of the Akron RubberDucks!) is the only place I know offhand where I can get jalapeno slices for my ‘dog).

You mean …. something like this, maybe?
I go to a lot of minor league baseball games – or hell, high school and college games … I’ll pull over and watch a Little League game if I have the time. But I haven’t sought out the minor league hockey world. That would be fun!
Oh, yeah — the slot cars. :-)
