Snapshots From Party

… celebrating the opening of my friend Jen’s acting studio:

— “She caught the piece of cheese cake … with her esophagus.”

— I said hi to Johnny and within 2 seconds, I made some emphatic gesture and basically karate-chopped his plastic cup of wine out of his hand.

— Nice long conversation with Dion, and then someone else entered the party, and Dion said, “Excuse me. I have to say hi to this guy. I have no idea who he is but we’re the only two black people here. I have to say hi to him.” The guy walks by and Dion greets him – “Hey, man, how are you? We’re the only two black people here. I just had to say hi.” The guy was SO funny in response – a bit taken aback, but friendly, they shook hands – everyone was guffawing. Like, “Hey! You and me! We’re black!”

— Nice conversation with Jen’s mother. I haven’t seen her in a long time.

— “How are you? Having fun?”
“I’m a little bit stressed. I have BO right now.”

— Talking with Bob (an old friend, haven’t seen him in years) about gratitude. Making space for it in our everyday lives.

The studio looks great. Jen hung movie posters on the wall – Jaws, Pulp Fiction – old friends were there and new, her family, and her students. We all huddled in the hallway, chit-chatting, drinking wine, and I saw some people I haven’t seen in years. It was a really nice shindig, a success all around.

Ok, I just spit coffee on my keyboard. It’s so funny because I can totally see that happening in my head!

Sheil…i feel like i do that at every party i ever go to…its a go-to move!

  3. Cullen says:

    Hey! We’re Black!

    That’s awesome.

I have done my share of cup knocking and I have had my fair share of cups knocked from me. I guess some cups just gotta get knocked.

    Sheila-

    Did you take any pics?

  5. red says:

Cullen – I know! Thank goodness it was white wine, first of all – meanwhile Johnny was like, “I hate wine anyway – I’m more of a whiskey man.” It was the CHOPPINESS of the gesture that was so funny – I just BATTED the thing out of his hand!!

    It was a good night.

  6. red says:

Mitchell – you would have loved this crowd. It was a great gathering.

Oh, and a funny moment: it got so crowded at one point that the security guard downstairs wasn’t letting anyone else up. Jen’s mother was stuck downstairs, and they would not let her up. The MOTHER of the woman whose event this was!

Jen’s mother opened her purse, took out the corkscrew (which was desperately needed upstairs), and said, “I have the corkscrew and I am the mother.”

    hahahaha

    They let her up!

De – Oh, and thankfully, I was not the only one who had such a moment. The hallway outside the studio was so narrow, that people were having many karate-chopping-wine-spillage moments – because there was no room for GESTURES.

  8. Dave E. says:

I’ve found that “karate-chopping-wine-spillage moments” can be prevented by always having a drink in each hand. ;)

I particularly like the BO comment. I have a very specific sweat when I am stressed. I could run 5 miles and sweat and it wouldn’t stink – I can be on stage for 5 minutes and I have BO. “Thanks for sharing Jackie.”

    Congrats to Jen!

  10. Lou says:

    Sheila-

No special reason, other than illustration. Just wanted to see some faces attached with names. Or karate moves. LOL

  11. red says:

Nope, no pics. You’ll just have to imagine it!

  12. red says:

Jackie – “thanks for sharing Jackie” hahahaha I could totally hear your voice saying that.
