Marilyn the Bookworm

A wonderful compilation of photos.

Moira writes:

Beginning this little project of unearthing photos of actors and their reading matter, I’d no idea that Marilyn Monroe would prove to have been one lady who was most often photographed in this most civilized of pastimes.

Wow. What a coincidence. I am often found sitting on the floor, reading, in my pink taffeta evening gown.

Seriously, what total eye candy for bibliophiles….Marilyn and books!

Great pics!!! And indeed, a wonderful combination for a book lover and a Marilyn fan like me, haha!!

I used to study her bookshelves (or what is visible of them) in such photos and would get whatever I could find that she was reading; for example, I saw a fat volume called “The Idiot”, and that’s how I read my first Dostoevsky. Then came the Brothers Karamazov, etc. I owe this fantastic discovery to Marilyn!!

Those are so sweet. I particularly love the ones that are not posed (or at least not obviously posed), like her sitting on the playground merry-go-round.

    And reading Ulysses, no less!!!

She actually did read that book. Someone suggested to her (maybe Shelley Winters?) that Molly Bloom would be a good role for her (which is true).

I love that picture so much.
