Hahaha! Thanks for this space, Sheila.

And sorry to hear about the health problems. Hang in there.

  2. Natalie says:

I know I may be in the minority here, but Dean and Claire playing mini golf was like a gift from the heavens for me. Claire reminded me so much of some of my teen clients in this one. (The hurt and hope underneath her anger was awesome. Saving the postcards from her mom was not the act of someone who just wanted to tell her mother off – what she wanted all along was to have her mom back, even if she didn’t know that.)

Sheila, I hope you feel better!

    • sheila says:

      Thanks Natalie!

Claire and Dean playing mini-golf was awesome. Their last scene together was great too – not to mention that dreamy dreamy sunrise light. I love Dean being forced to take care of/identify with this girl who starts out hating him. Hands her the gun: “Happy birthday.” hahahaha

I agree with your observations about the levels in her performance. Cradling her mother in her arms at the end was heartbreaking. She’s a teenager, and she’s pissed, but she wants her Mom – I think that’s all there in her performance.

I have not been a fan of Castiel’s domestic journey this season – but an episode like this, for me, is evidence of how these smaller arcs can add up to something meaningful. I found it quite meaningful – and teared up seeing Jimmy and Amelia in heaven.

That four-way fight scene in the barn was incredible. I mean, you could barely see anything, but still – that was a really good sequence.

      Oil derrick wall dividers.

Willie Nelson closing out the episode? Which aired on his 82nd birthday?

      Well played, Supernatural, well played.

      • sheila says:

and Elvis covered that song too.

Hell, everyone covered that song. But still. It made me happy to hear it. A perfect song, especially considering Misha Collins’ ice-blue eyes.

      • Helena says:

//I mean, you could barely see anything, but still – that was a really good sequence.//

God, a great fight sequence, and it really called back to the the early seasons’ ‘can’t see the fuck what’s going on’ look. So pleased they went there in this ep.

        • sheila says:

Helena – yes, the darkness! I loved the darkness of that barn structure, and the deep dark blues and blacks of the faces. It was beautiful.

Also the darkness of the alley outside the bar – also beautiful and moody.

And that fight was crazy! Actually it was five to one, since Claire ended up getting involved as well. It was great.

    • May says:

You are not alone. The mini-golf was awesome. I was indifferent to Claire before, but this episode won me over.

      • sheila says:

I feel the same way about Claire ! Maybe it’s because of my disenchantment with Castiel at the moment – (The CW Tweeted a promo line like: “How far will Castiel go to save Claire?” and I wanted to Tweet back, “I don’t CARE.”) But in this episode, Sam and Dean had to deal with her, and her scenes with Dean made her a more interesting character. (That’s Ackles, too – who makes anybody more interesting in whatever scene they are doing. He’s just that kind of actor.)

I loved his childish fake laugh right before he took her to play mini-golf. Like, he’s a big kid, too. He is not mature. He is totally childish. And she clocks it. That made me laugh.

Also – the image of him somehow tracking down a CD of Caddyshack, in the 10 minutes he has free while working the case? Minor heart-crack.

  3. sheila says:

Okay, the sheriff turning away to answer a call, saying, “Sheriff Coltrane …”

Ha. So she’s using a musician alias too?

  4. Albee says:

This episode did not grab me at all. I think seeing a different actress as Amelia just threw me out of things and it all went downhill from there. Also, the Claire actress just rubs me the wrong way; I zone out while she talks. Her teenage angst is too tiring. Also, it was unreal that Dean was so nice and accepting after she tried to have him murdered last time they were together. The Grigori was not interesting to me – his story about sucking down souls seemed rehashed. The one thing that got my interest in the episode was seeing Sam getting hit in the head/knocked out again! I worry for the guy. I checked out some other comments from this episode – fans are feeling that the rest of the season is being set up for Cas to leave the show. Anyone else getting that vibe?

Anyone else order a Represent T-shirt? I broke down after seeing those last 2-3 adorable videos the J’s put up. Those guys are irresistible.

Thanks for this thread, Sheila. Get better soon.

    • sheila says:

      Thanks, Albee!

// fans are feeling that the rest of the season is being set up for Cas to leave the show. //

Huh. Interesting. Yeah, I can see that!

// I think seeing a different actress as Amelia just threw me out of things and it all went downhill from there. //

Eh. That’s television. Didn’t bother me.

And Claire has grown on me. I like the idea that Castiel feels responsible for her. And that Dean would try to talk him out of that, but Sam gets it. That was an interesting examination of the issue of responsibility and where the Winchester boys are at with it. Also Sam talking about his mother. LOTS of John and Mary conversations this season. Really like it.

      In re: Castiel:

I feel like Castiel has so over-stayed his welcome on the show that I have a hard time hooking into his story-line. The season started with this cliffhanger of his lost grace where he basically was suffering from bubonic plague or tuberculosis or something. And then episodes went by where you never saw him, just heard him coughing into the phone. But there was no build in that arc at all – and Hannah – oh God, Hannah … she could not leave the series soon enough for me – and now he has his grace back but I barely remember that moment even happening. You know? The build somehow wasn’t there. Dean and the Mark has taken up all the oxygen on the show – and that’s good and right, I think – that’s all I care about – but it makes for a strange un-evenness in treatment.

Same with Crowley. What’s so interesting to me is that this is a show going into its 11th year – and STILL it relies on the two leads. As big and flexible as the ensemble has gotten at points … it’s still all about those two lead guys. And so – almost by a natural organic process … other characters write themselves out of the narrative. It seems to happen organically – although there are exceptions. They clearly felt the need to get rid of Lisa once and for all, for example. But it’s kind of interesting to look at the series as a whole – and see how – unlike larger ensemble shows – really the only thing that ends up mattering is those two lead guys. It’s a blessing and a curse.

So all of these secondary characters like Castiel and Crowley, who were so super important 2 or 3 seasons ago – seem, like, adrift in the wrong show. They sort of cringe into the action like, “Hey there member me? Do you mind if I just quietly get my grace back? Do you mind if I just remind you of my existence as the King of Hell even though I have had nothing to do for 6 episodes now? Is it okay that I’m still here?”

Ha. I don’t mind it though. The show is all over the place, and I guess I prefer it all over the place.

I thought Misha Collins did terrific work in this episode. I also love the idea of Sam and Dean dropping off every other wayward girl at Jodie Mills’ place. “Hey, Sheriff, we got another one!”

All in all, I am enjoying Season 10 very much.

      • Paula says:

Jody Mills’ Home for Wayward, Motherless Girls. Do you think Krissy Chambers will stop by? Maybe Sheriff Donna comes over and they all do a spa weekend?

        • Helena says:

//Jody Mills’ Home for Wayward, Motherless Girls. Do you think Krissy Chambers will stop by? /

I’d love to see that episode. I think it’s more likely Jodie and Donna might need to organise some kind of getaway spa weekend to get some time off from all the wayward girls ;-)

Is Chrissie at university now? In which case she’s probably majoring in sciences, maybe astrophysics, long distance time travel, discovering wormholes and investigating the possibility of life on other planets. As a keen online games player she’s also pretty vocal about gamergate, and so far anyone threatening to doxx her has mysteriously found credit cards cease to work. The Winchesters are basically filed under ancient history, but Chrissy thinks just for laughs she will invite them to her graduation. Annie Ann has long ditched that boyfriend who was into fireworks and has signed up for a few courses at the local college – mainly art related and also psychology. Down the line she thinks she might become a professional counsellor working with kids, but that’s way down the line and meanwhile there’s boyfriend number 2? 3? who’s a lifeguard at the local pool, so there’s that. As for Claire, she is has a stack of stuff to work through but when she gets to Jodie’s she and Annie Ann bond over the fact that the Winchesters are kind of old jerks but mean well and then move swiftly onto discussions of angelic iconography in Renaissance art history, mothers, how Jodie is awesome but it would be bad form to say so. Also: tongue piercings – yes or no?

        • sheila says:

Krissy must return at some point, yes?

And Sheriff Donna. I went back and re-watched that episode recently and am even more in love with it.

          “Jodeo!” – called from off-camera.

  5. Paula says:

Love this season so far but I do agree that Crowley and Castiel are //adrift//. What’s the point of a King of Hell and an Angel who mope around? I think Crowley will be dead in the next few episodes and I hope they make it memorable.

Only in the SPN world would you get a great line of dialogue like Sam’s “My mom died when I was a baby, but I got to know her later in life and we got along alright.” Classic mix of awwww, poor Sam, and WTF did he just say?

    • mutecypher says:

At some point the show needs to use Dylan’s “Death Is Not The End.”

    • sheila says:

// What’s the point of a King of Hell and an Angel who mope around? //

Paula, I have been laughing about this observation for 10 minutes. Exactly!

// “My mom died when I was a baby, but I got to know her later in life and we got along alright.” Classic mix of awwww, poor Sam, and WTF did he just say? //

      hahahaha! !!

  6. Paula says:

Other interaction I enjoyed was the two different conversations in the car between Cas/Dean and Cas/Sam about Claire, where he is getting completely different opinions about whether to stay involved in her life. Sam and Dean are almost always together presenting a united front, say to hear Dean say leave and Sam say stay involved seemed a role reversal of how they typically think of family (with Dean clinging to keep his family together and Sam going off on his own).

  7. mutecypher says:

I like happy-and-at-peace Dean. It does have a tension, since you know it won’t last. He doesn’t seem to have the angst or the manic shots-and-bacon-cheeseburgers energy of earlier arcs where you knew things were going to end badly for him. Sam’s the one we’re worried about – what will be the consequences of his actions? There’s a real funhouse of mirrors going on (as usual) with the two of them: Dean’s “the universe is telling us we’re better together,” and Sam’s guilt over secrets from Dean, and Sam saying that he’ll do anything for his brother. But I wonder if that means sticking around after Dean’s saved. I think that Sam will regress toward his mean status of wanting to be on his own (sorry, tutoring statistics lately, so I’ve got metaphors from that area). I think Sam is the one who’s really out of equilibrium, so I’m not trusting his desire to stay a duo.

As Sheila remarked, the show is about those two – so I think the writers just get to go all rococo with the boy melodrama.

Claire taking the Grigori’s sword – does everyone they meet decide to become a hunter?

Where did Dean get that Giant Book of Enochian Myths? Does he have Amazon Prime GPS’d to Baby? Was it from the library that is under the armory in Baby’s trunk?

Sheila, I hope you get healthy soon. You rock.

    • sheila says:

// I think Sam is the one who’s really out of equilibrium, //

Interesting thought!! I hadn’t considered that.

Maybe he Amazon Prime-d both the Enochian Book and the copy of Caddyshack.

Also my sisters and I can quote Happy Gilmore from beginning to end. I love how Dean was sort of pissed – but had to grudgingly accept that her quoting Happy Gilmore was “well-played.” Dean was all over the place. It was so funny.

  8. Lyrie says:

I loved Claire’s serial-killer-hunter wall, and Sam recognizing the good work. Sam showing her how to hack stuff, and Dean giving her a gun… That’s what moved me most in this episode. ‘Happy birthday. Don’t shoot me’.

I hope next season we’ll get a crazy episode at Jody Mills’. (Hear that, Person Writing The Show Just For Us?)

I love Dean relating to an angry teenage girl. ‘What? You want me to stay here? Really? You don’t trust me? You guys suck!’

    I miss Benny. (sorry)

    • sheila says:

Yes, Sam complimenting her on her serial-killer wall. Ha !!

And the whole “here’s a gun” thing reminded me of Sam giving the gun to Adam – with that great huge motel-room mural behind them (one of my favorite shots in the whole series). And how Dean was like, “Don’t give him a gun, leave him out of it”. Cut to 5 seasons later: “Happy birthday. Don’t shoot me.” Great.

  9. Dan says:

I hope you feel better soon, and that the next few months are great. And thank you for continuing to fill this space with great writing.

  10. Lyrie says:

    Damn, Sera Gamble is hot.
Sorry, was that completely inappropriate? At least, it’s vaguely Supernatural-related, right? Right?
    Well, too late.

  11. May says:

This was another really enjoyable episode! Hard to pick a favourite part, but I really liked when Dean slammed that guy’s head into the table for calling Claire a bitch. Perhaps I’ve grown used to his violence, but that seemed more “normal” Dean to me than a MOC thing.

    • May says:

Whoops! Posted before I was finished…

I’m also loving how open both Sam and Dean have been lately about stuff. Sam especially! Yeah, he’s still lying to Dean, but talking about Jess and then his Mom? It feels like real character progress.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with season 10 so far.

      (Feel better, Sheila!)

      • sheila says:

// I’m also loving how open both Sam and Dean have been lately about stuff. Sam especially! Yeah, he’s still lying to Dean, but talking about Jess and then his Mom? It feels like real character progress. //

I totally agree. Their relationship has really changed in a significant way – I mean think about the bleak-ness of Season 9. Wow. I am loving their dynamic together.

    • sheila says:

Yes, I loved that moment too – especially since I believe in his first meeting with Claire he referred to her as a “chick” and then “Miley Cyrus” (hahaha) – so he’s come a long way.

Castiel, in his language – “You both were troubled teens” – almost forced the issue. He forced Dean to identify, in a way. “She’s like you.”

  12. bainer says:

I enjoyed this episode. I, too, felt Dean hadn’t “snapped”; it felt like Dean sans mark would have done the same to a guy who put a teenager in the hospital.

Can we talk about Sam’s hair? It needs to be either shorter or longer but that in between bob makes him look knuckleheaded. I guess after all the hits to the head it might explain his lack of hunter skills (answering a phone in the midst of stalking a bad guy?)

I did like this episode, though. It felt satisfying and I would watch the crap out of a spin-off with Jody Mills’ home for wayward/hunter girls, with Krissy and Donna. Brilliant.

    • sheila says:

// Can we talk about Sam’s hair? //

      hahaha

By all means. I didn’t really notice his hair this episode, though – I know – blasphemy. There have been some episodes where Sam practically looks like Marlo Thomas in That Girl.

Although I did notice Dean’s huge thick almost duck-tail look in that final scene. His hair also looks longer than usual and it would take a lot of product to make it do what it did in that last scene with Claire. No judgment. Just an observation. I like Dean with the short almost military-look to his hair. I was like, “Wow, dude, you basically have a pompadour sticking straight up from your forehead!”

    • Paula says:

Sam’s hair – definitely problematic. Where’s the savior hair with highlights from S8?! Even more disturbed by his choice in transportation when solo this season. That non descript POS white truck and beige car? I get he prefers to be under the radar but the MoL garage is full of awesome vintage cars at his disposal and these are his choices? It’s like hair shirt transpo.

  13. mercedes says:

hi. wow, i like the brothers playing the “mentors” mmento. please please writers, i want a chapter about this and if it could be set in the bunker it would be so awesome!!!!

and so, the first uk covention is about to take place and it will cach me around winchester city… wait a moment, the winchester family in birmingham? me in winchester? do i stand a chance? i will do everything that is in my hand for that meeting. you all will be with me in spirit.

  14. Ninluth says:

Hey! I just discovered your blog and I really like it but I gotta comment about the whole Cas and Crowley “adrift thing” (Also please excuse my poor grammar, I aint ejimacated none)

I could be wrong about this so please correct me but Alex Epstein says that when actors come on as series regulars they are paid even if they arent in an episode and that the writers almost always try to find a place for them in every episode unless they have an important reason not to, so I feel that their lack of presence lately has been on purpose, and I’m not exactly sure why, I do think that Cas and Dean are separated due to the fact that usually when Cas is around Dean seems a bit happier because he’s his best friend (Not including Sam since he’s his brother) but I’m guessing Crowley is rarely there because it’s building up to when he dies?

There was some interesting theories on Tumblr I say that say that when Cain told Dean he would live his life in reverse it would actually be SAM to live it in reverse instead, Sam said he would kill crowley, and there’s a furthering theory that states that Cas’ grace might have something to do with removing the mark of cain, due to it’s importance in the spell that made the angels fall, but again just a theory.

Now I’m not saying that the way Crowley and Cas’ air time is being presented is all that great- I mean sometimes I facepalm when it comes to Crowley’s minions- but I feel that it is all for a reason, plus who doesn’t love the corniness of supernatural? It gives off a buffy-vibe that I love.

Anyway thank you for reading! (Do I get email updates if I reply? So new to this I literally just found your website TODAY haha)

    • sheila says:

      Ninluth – welcome!

I don’t think you’ll get email updates for replies – you have to stop by here to check out the conversation again. I’m just not that up-t0-date !! But there are always good conversations going on here, so I hope you stop by again!

      Anyway –

Yes, I know how guest stars work on episodic television, as well as “series regulars.” It’s in the contract that they will appear in a certain amount of episodes, their names will be in the main credits in every episode (whether they appear or not), and they are paid accordingly. But that is no excuse for having characters drift about with nothing to do. Either someone works in the narrative or they don’t – and they have not figured out a way to keep Castiel and Crowley relevant in Season 10. All I care about is what is onscreen. The backstage stuff and justifications from creators/writers don’t matter. I know a lot of fans care about that stuff but I don’t.

Castiel and Crowley are obviously fan favorites – and I understand why! Castiel has not been entertaining (for me) for a couple of seasons. I’ve lost interest in him and I don’t like how they have developed the character. Crowley is great, and adds great tension – Season 9, especially during the final stretch of episodes, he was delightfully creepy and predatory. Season 10, though? He sits on his throne doing nothing. It does not work, story-wise. – They have not figured out a way to keep Cas/Crowley engrained in the action in a meaningful way.

I realize I’m not speaking for everyone. This is just my take – I am not a big Castiel fan. My favorite Castiel is Season 4 and Season 5, when he seemed entirely “Other,” ferocious and frightening and mysterious. Fabulous. His entrance is one of the best things the show has ever done. I like him dead-pan and clueless and unpredictable. His fan-base seems to find him adorable – but I don’t like Castiel when he is “adorable”. I don’t like him talking about Wookies, and being “pop culture savvy” and stuff like that. I cringe. I think it’s awful. This is just a personal preference – I am obviously not his regular audience. So, you know, different strokes/different folks.

The fact that Castiel’s storyline is completely separated from Sam and Dean’s now – to me is evidence that they aren’t sure what to do with his character right now. He has outlived his usefulness. I like him best as a mysterious sidekick, in service to Sam and Dean. I am just not interested in him otherwise.

That being said: this last episode I really enjoyed! I thought all of the issues of responsibility and family – were brought together really nicely – connecting Sam and Dean to Castiel and Claire – and it was very emotional and satisfying.

So, you know. It’s a mixed bag.

Thank you for reading and commenting !!

I can’t believe we’re almost done with Season 10! This one really flew by.

    • sheila says:

// plus who doesn’t love the corniness of supernatural? //

Totally agree! I think its corniness is its greatest asset !

And I am sure you are right – that all of this may be for a reason – but it needs to be clearer in the execution (in my opinion). Compare to Castiel’s betrayal in Season 7 – that was clearly set-up and was an invisible Arc running for multiple episodes – and there was a clear plan behind all of that. His disappearances, his absence … all of that did end up making sense and it was also deeply felt in the episodes where he WAS absent. They were really working that Castiel arc – and here, I just don’t feel that same certainty of structure.

      • Ninluth says:

I see what you mean! And yeah I didn’t get an update haha it’s alright I’ll just continue to check!

And yeah sometimes spn’s execution isn’t the best, but I think Robbie Thompson is a great writer and his episodes never disappoint.

And yeah jeez season 10 has only 3 episodes left! It’s crazy, I grew up watching the show with my dad (Which my dad was crazy for letting me watch it at such a young age haha) and then I stopped around season 5 cuz my dad passed away, I didn’t start it up again until they were almost done with the ninth season! (The newest episode I waited on was the Fish taco; pishtaco or whatever one lol) So I’ve been caught up since then I’m so glad I did cuz I really do love this fandom! Most of us are really great people! You do get bad eggs every once in a while but it’s alright, the good ones make up for it.

well that was semi off topic~ anyway

Yeah I love cas as an adorable kermudgen, but I also love his stoic scariness of his first couple seasons. I think that he’s got great character development but I feel the reason why they are at a stand still with him is that they probably have one BIG plan for him but it cant be executed until maybe next season, so he’s //Adrift// as you said. Which I know is no excuse XD But Jeremy Carver says he knows how he wants it to end so I trust that he will deliver some epicness this finale cuz I’m dying for that cliffhanger!

        • sheila says:

Ninuth – I love to hear stories of how people came to this show. It’s all so diverse!

I will say as I think I said somewhere else – seeing Castiel explode with his grace, and basically destroy the library excited me – because my God, we had two seasons of him moping around and being powerless and yearning and connecting with children (Yuk!). I am sure all of this hit a sweet spot in his fans – and I don’t begrudge them that – I seriously don’t – but seeing him explode in power yet again … well, that was very exciting.

And yes, I am sure they have something big planned for him. But that Hannah Arc. Oy!!! Glad that one is over – although who can say. Nothing is ever “over” in Supernatural, right??

Luckily the show always has a lot going on to please everyone. It’s amazing they’ve kept it up for as long as they have! I’m in till the end, till the Impala rides off into the sunset. :)

          • Ninluth says:

YES! I know when he got his grace back I freaked out and then the look of his wings all broken and frayed made me so sad! The last time we saw em was in Lazarus Rising right?

And yeah Hannah was horrible, the only time I liked her was when she was in the body of that man because I knew her story was “Over” so everything was fine haha, but props to that actor who just nailed playing hannah for like three seconds.

Also can’t wait for another Charlie episode, she’s definitely one of my favorites! YAY! Tomorrow!

          • sheila says:

Castiel’s ragged tattered wings was extremely emotional – yes!

  15. CleverlyLemon says:

I have stalked your blog for a long time because nobody, I repeat, NOBODY reviews Supernatural like you do! I am riveted by your observations. All your knowledge of film, TV industry and genre television make for such a unique perspective. Plus you love Sam and Dean (as well as Jared & Jensen) and that bleeds through everything you write.

Also, you have a gift to criticize/critique the show without making it seem like you hate the show or the story line. It is more like a parent saying “Come on child. You can do better! I’ve seen it!” :D

I am greatly looking forward to reading your reviews heading to the end of Season 2. I think the last 3 episodes of that season are one of the strongest multiple episode runs of the series.

    • sheila says:

Lemon – I appreciate the stalking! (And that’s probably the only time I would ever say those words. Ha!) Very happy that you enjoy the Supernatural stuff – I know I’m having fun doing it. I welcome all of the discussions – which have certainly been some of the best most vigorous (most hilarious) conversations I’ve ever hosted on this site. I mean, the comments thread to Route 666 alone … If I’m ever feeling blue, I can just go back and read through that hilarity.

Do some people not love Sam and Dean? How can this be possible?? But yes, I love them both! They are so great together.

And thank you, yes, I think critiquing stuff is important (obviously – ha!) – and I think there’s a way to do it that furthers the conversation as opposed to shuts conversation down. I love to talk about what doesn’t work as well as what does – that’s where you get the really good conversations.

I promise to get back to the re-caps as soon as I can! I actually blocked out the first couple of scenes of “Roadkill” – an episode I love – but my schedule right now, oy. The final sweep of Season 2 is just masterful, I think – some of my favorite episodes coming up.

Thanks for your patience – and thanks for reading and commenting. I really appreciate it!
