Review: Eden (2015); directed by Mia Hansen-Løve
Mia Hansen-Løve is such an interesting writer/director. Her latest feature, Eden, is really compelling. Check out her other films too (Tout est pardonne, Goodbye, First Love and Father of My Children. I love her stuff. It’s not really like anything … Continue reading
Review: Love & Mercy (2015)
Glenn Kenny’s beautiful review of Love & Mercy expresses much of my own response to this emotional and well-done film. It’s a portrait of Brian Wilson, his genius, his struggles, his visionary capabilities, as well as his well-known suffering … … Continue reading
Review: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)
Putting it mildly, I did not care for this year’s breakout Sundance hit, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. My review of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is now up at Rogerebert.com.
Review: The Nightmare (2015)
A really creepy and fun documentary about the sleep disorder known as “sleep paralysis.” Directed by Rodney Ascher, who brought us Room 237 in 2013, about the obsessive audience reaction to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. The Nightmare is different, although … Continue reading
Review: Results (2015); directed by Andrew Bujalski
I’m a fan of the work of writer/director Andrew Bujalski. He emerged from the “mumblecore” crowd with a unique vision and style (he stood out because he had a style, not to mention actual shooting scripts). Computer Chess was fantastic, … Continue reading
Review: Love at First Fight (2015)
Don’t let the bad title stop you from seeing it. The French title is much better: Les Combatants. This is a French rom-com. I really really liked it. My review of Love at First Fight is now up at Rogerebert.com.
Review: Animals (2015)
It’s hard to make a drug-addict story feel new (partially because all drug addicts end up being relatively the same). But Animals is a confident first feature. Gorgeous Chicago cinematography. My review of Animals is up at Rogerebert.com.
Review: The Film Critic (2015)
Making fun of gloomy film critics is like shooting fish in a barrel, but I enjoyed The Film Critic, written/directed by an Argentinian film critic. It’s insular humor, directed at the sub-culture of film critics, so I’m not sure how … Continue reading
Review: I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story (2015)
A heartwarming and very interesting documentary about Caroll Spinney, the man behind Big Bird. My review of I Am Big Bird is now up at Rogerebert.com.
Review: Bravetown (2015)
I really liked this movie. I could feel the formulas working, and sometimes there were too many formulae in one given moment, but the end result is its own thing. Very good. My review of Bravetown is up at The … Continue reading
