Martin and Lewis

Here is an amazing post with thoughts about Dino.

Ever notice how most people will say they prefer Dean over Jerry? I’ve heard it time and again. I’ve also heard people say they prefer Dean over Frank. What was the man’s secret? Just this, I suspect — this guy didn’t do needy. Never. Not with anybody. And most of us think that’s cool. Because we don’t want to be needy either. A pox on Jerry and his unleashed emotion on those telethons! Damn that childish Frank and his spaghetti assault on this cool, unflappable man. Yes, I suspect we’d all like to be a little more like Dean. Not all the way, mind you, because by all accounts, his loner habits did not necessarily make for a happy life, particularly toward the end, but who wouldn’t want that calm exterior? They say that even with all that spaghetti matting in his hair, Dean just got up calmly, walked into the bathroom, and waited for a penitent Frank to leave his hotel suite. The only thing that seems to have really impacted on Dean was his son’s tragic death during a jet-training flight in 1987.

And check out those photos. Elvis Presley is gorgeous. Beautiful, more like. But Dean is handsome. Manly handsome.

Wonderful photo below – I just love the whole world it represents – the glimpse into it – the spirit of it:

Any guy whose contrasting personality could make Jerry Lewis seem less annoying has got to possess a nearly unearthly level of coolness. Another reason why he’d be a better at a BBQ – he probably wouldn’t have thrown food on any of the other guests.

Yeah – he’d probably just hover either by the grill, or by the makeshift bar, and keep everybody laughing and happy.

I used to love those Martin & Lewis movies as a kid – we watched them all the time – they are truly INSANE. But now, sometimes all I can see when I think of Jerry Lewis is Martin Short’s imitation of him, which is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life.

Ya know, it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I even knew that Lewis and Martin were a team (Yeah, I lead a sheltered life). Even as a kid, I never laughed at a single joke or pratfall in a Jerry Lewis movie.

Now Dean Martin was cool: I knew him from the Matt Helm movies… Heck I grew up during his TV show (i.e. “Welcome to my world…”)

In fact, one of my favorite scenes of all time is the bar scene where Dude shoots the “sniper” out of the rafters (Granted, I love it because of the way the Duke smacks the guy, who said no one entered the bar, with the stock of his rifle)… but even in that movie he was cool (maybe not as cool as the famous western hero, Ricky Nelson, but still cool)

    I love that rafters scene!

My father introduced me to Rio Bravo at a very young age (He claims it’s the greatest Western ever made…) When asked what those “little cans” were under the bar and why Dude didn’t want to reach into one, my dad explained to me the grossest public behavior that I, as a 5 year old, could imagine.

    hahahahahahaha!!!

I love Dean Martin. I had a crush on this gorgeous man for years. He was just so darn cool.
Love Rio Bravo, and although I am not a spy movie fan, I like Dean’s 1966 movie, “Murderers Row” with Ann Margret. Great tribute. Thanks.
