Very interesting. Makes me want to draw an outline and see how correct it is.
I thought the same thing!
You know, that actually saddens me a little bit. These are teen-age girls, why don’t they know what their country looks like? When I was in elementary school i could name all the states and their capitals and I knew approximately where to place them on a map. Not to mention that just about every classroom i stepped foot in from 1st grade on had a map of the US on the wall. Why aren’t these better? I’m so foncused! I might give it a try at work today and see how it comes out. I wonder if there’s a time limit or if they had to do it all in one stroke. That would change things a bit, no?
Marti – I guess a lot of those look pretty close to how I would draw it, if i were to draw it. Not the one that is clearly just the state of Nevada – what is THAT about? – has that person never left Nevada? – but a lot of them seem pretty damn close to me. Especially the ones that feature the dips into the landscape of the Great Lakes.
But I, too, could name all the state capitals and stuff like that – and you know, I have retained quite a bit of that memorize-by-rote knowledge, which makes me happy.
I also am happy to see that SOME people remembered Cape Cod. not all … but some!
Oh, I’m absolutely glad I can remember that sort of thing. I have to thank the work of the Animaniacs, TMBG, and other writers of interesting and factoid-filled songs. If you can put it to music, I can learn it. Next up for me is working on learning all the Presidents.
I was at a dinner party last week and somehow all of the Presidents came up – and a woman there suddenly, out of nowhere, began to sing – her own little tune – and she sang ALL the presidents – one after the other. She had made up this tune – where each of the presidents names fit in with the melody – she made it up when she was a kid – so I think her tune only went up to Ford or Carter … but she sang every one. There at this nice little dinner party with candlelight and hors d’oevres. It was hysterical and so cool.
We all were just stunned into silence as we listened to the whole tune and then burst into applause.
There were many names on there I had totally forgotten.
I think the United States that’s my favorite is the one near the bottom that looks like those scalloped-edged paper placemats you see in diners.
