You’re rooting for him to win tonight I presume??
It is a moral imperative!
I’m really just happy he’s having his moment in the sun after all this time … but man … man … him winning???
AHHHHHHHHHHH
All through this awards season I’ve been going back and forward between him and Sean Penn, but I think I’m leaning towards Mickey Rourke right now. He’ll give a way more entertaining/moving speech, at least. Sean Penn just seems like a humourless bastard really.
Oh but he’s a marvelous actor – he really is. Mickey Rourke can be a bastard, too. These are not pleasant or particularly civilized men. They’re movie actors. Sean Penn gave an amazing performance, too – he’s an incredible chameleon – I just hope that this is Mickey Rourke’s moment. And although Penn is ambitious as hell, I know Mickey Rourke is one of his idols (he gave him one of his best roles ever – his 5 minute cameo in The Pledge) … and so I like to think that Penn is rooting for Rourke too.
Oh no, you misunderstand me! I’m under no illusions that Mickey is a really nice guy, or anything. I was just talking about if he wins, his speech (like last night at the Indie Spirits) will probably be massively entertaining and probably emotional – his dogs, his comeback, etc. And Sean Penn at awards ceremonies always seems grumpy and reticent. So from a purely entertainment viewpoint, I’m hoping for Rourke.
But I totally agree with you, both gave powerhouse performances! If either wins, I’ll be delighted.
Catherine – Oh, I get you!! Sorry for that!
Yes, let’s lighten up the atmosphere a bit with Mickey! He’s going up there winning awards and thanking his DOGS as well as swearing on occasion. Wearing sunglasses. It’s awesome!
Sean Penn, rebel or no, is establishment … Mickey Rourke is the antithesis of that!!
It’s like seeing Jack Nicholson sitting in the front row of all the awards shows, with his sunglasses on, and he brings a rakish “oh whatEVER” energy – which really loosens things up.
People can take these things way too seriously!!
I wanted him to win, but I loved Milk and Sean Penn in Milk so much I’m glad he got it. We haven’t seen the last of Mickey. People have realized how much they’ve missed the son of a bitch and I think the next few years are going to be very interesting. But I would have liked to see the first acceptance speech in history that had to be bleeped too.
I’m going to replay that crazy Independent Spirit speech award to remind myself of just how wild Rourke is, how much of an outsider. Who else says “banging some girl up the ass” in an acceptance speech? Who else STARTS with a five-minute monologue shouting how much he loves Eric Roberts? hahahaha Eric being like, “ACCEPT YOUR AWARD!” I loved that moment.
People in Hollywood can take themselves so damn seriously, and it’s just nice to see things a little LOOSE, a little DIRTY.
I agree that the next couple of years will be interesting. I’ve been watching this whole thing carefully and it felt like he (Rourke, I mean) really dominated this awards season – the “buzz” was his (maybe cause Wrestler came out after Milk, too – because there was definitely “buzz” when Milk came out) … I just think that THIS was the role for Rourke. I could be totally wrong. Dude has surprised me before!
I just am so appreciative that this moment has come to pass at all! Look at this man’s journey – just incredible!!
Robbed, I tell ya!
I don’t think so, not really. Penn gave a great performance, too, something completely unexpected and fully realized. I was rooting for Mickey, obviously, but Penn’s performance was terrific, too. It was nice that he acknowledged Rourke too. And Rourke blowing a huge kiss. Ha! Penn was the one (along with others – like Coppola and Rodriguez) who started to put Rourke back into movies in the late 90s – so there’s a nice symmetry there. Rourke’s 5 minutes in The Pledge is as good as acting gets … and I just love that Penn gave him that (and also that Jack Nicholson is the other guy in the scene – and you can just sense him backing the hell out of the way to give Rourke more room).
It’s just great that I have lived long enough to see this day. I still can’t get over it!
I thought it was a good ceremony, in general. I enjoyed the vibe (more commentary over at Flickhead’s from peeps who felt the same way I did). As usual, I don’t line up with the bitch-fest, because what I see in these things – underneath the glitz – is a bunch of lucky actors, happy to be so lucky. I wish awards season would go on all year, frankly. But then I’d never leave the house, and I already have a problem in that arena.
Oh man…I wanted Mickey to win SO BAD.
I actually liked Sean Penn when he said something to the effect of “I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me.”
I love it when people “get” themselves!
Yes, de – I really liked that moment, too.
To me, there was something very loose and warm about this Oscar ceremony. It wasn’t as STIFF as it normally is. It felt like a community – moments like that helped.
There definitely needs to be a new tradition of one winner or presenter who does a a slight of hand trick. I ate that up.
