Review: Marguerite (2016)

I’m not sure why there are TWO movie-versions coming out this year about Florence Foster Jenkins, known as “the worst singer in the world.” Think I’m exaggerating? Have a listen.

So there’s the Stephen Frears one coming out later this year with Meryl Streep. But first up, we have Marguerite, the Cesar-winner.

It’s worth it to see Catherine Frot’s performance (it’s a marvel), but the thing falls apart in the end.

I review Marguerite over at Rogerebert.com.

  1. Lyrie says:

I never get tired of that version of The Magic Flute. *crying*

It’s sooooo funny you can’t believe it’s real.

and lISTEN to the piano player. Imagine what he was thinking. … dying …

  2. Obviously FFJ was the inspiration, but now I’m wishing our own Margaret Dumont had done this movie in 1933. She would have been uncanny. I’ve always loved that long-suffering woman.
