Bette and Joan

My 8 re-caps of Feud for the Times are here. It was such a fun assignment. Sorry to see it end.

I’ve absolutely loved your recaps! I sobbed through the last episode. Seeing Joan scrubbing the floor, her talking to her daughter and saying not to worry about her grandkids having fun-basically the whole last episode had me leaking tears. It seemed very Joan-centric at first, but then of course they switched to Bette for a while.

One scene I did have a problem with, I think because I pretty much hate BD-was where they were at the restaurant and BD came off as a very much 21st century character. She challenged Bette because she swatted her child for crying, as someone who grew up on that era-that was in no way out of the norm for grandparents to do. I never read BD’s book, and I never will-but I felt like the show was slamming on Bette in that scene. Numerous friends of Bette refuted BD’s claims, and Gary Merrill actually picketed outside a bookstore when it was released, I believe.

I was lucky I got to see some of the episodes with my sister when we were in CA-we rewatched a few On Demand and saw a new episode. So fun to watch it with someone totally invested in the show.

I did love the scene with Joan, Hedda, Bette and Jack-it was gorgeous.

I’m such a fan of both these women, and it breaks my heart that they ever thought they weren’t valued and admired. I’m not sure if it was the last episode or the one before, where Bette is kind of making fun of Joan being a glamor girl, and when the actor says something like “when Joan walked into the sea in Humoresque, looking gorgeous, it meant something to me.” That really struck me, these women really mean something to me, after all these years.

I’m so sorry to see it end. My big wish is that we would get to see Feud, the pre-sequel, to see them at the beginning at their career and at odds. How great would that be?
