Unsure where to ask this question, so I’ll leave it here.
Thoughts on Aronofsky’s mother!…?
The general consensus was divisive, but few opinions matter to me– was wondering about yours! Apologies if you’ve written on it before, I couldn’t find anything.
Hi Hillary! Interesting you should mention this – I was just writing up my “viewing diary” for December – not finished yet – and I did see Mother in December – long long after its initial buzz. I actually thought it was pretty great, albeit absolutely bonkers. And Michelle Pfeiffer just killed it, I thought – she was fantastic. Everyone was!
Aronofsky is hit-or-miss for me – and this wasn’t my favorite of his – but I thought it was a hoot.
also I know it sounds crazy, considering what ends up happening – but I want to live in that house. (In the early sequences in the film, that is.) I am in love with that house!
Couldn’t agree with you more on both Pfeiffer & the house, they were my favorite characters. I’m pretty sure I lost the air from my lungs every time she was on screen. And that HOUSE! Yes yes yes. I loved the forever octagonal architecture, like a frank lloyd wright design for an old fashioned country introvert.
I’ve never had such an immediate visceral reaction to a film before, was very bothered and angry with aronofsky at first. I was alone in the theater besides one woman who sat DIRECTLY in front of me, after it ended she turned to ask what I thought. I think I was still in shock, lol. She then very enthusiastically pointed out the religious allegory that I’m ashamed I hadn’t caught earlier. I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I naturally went back and fell in love. The overall allegorical plot, the execution & performances… It’s an experience that definitely sticks with you. (And hopefully changes the audience for the better.) I think any person healthy enough to ride a roller coaster should see it, especially cath-o-lics/christians. It’s such an art house film though that I can’t believe it got such a wide release. But glad it did. Wish it got more noms.
I also thought I would lose my mind with the way the guests were treating her – the lady of the house. That sink!! GET OFF THE FREAKING SINK. And the suspicion towards her – the total disregard … and how her husband didn’t stick up for her – It was driving me BATTY.
You’re right – a very visceral experience. I thought Lawrence was great.
Yes! I needed a xanax. My fav though, was everytime she called it her house they replied: “YOUR, house?” With that side eye! My insides were in knots for sure.
Well as heathens we’re destroying mother earth, but god lets us as we’re his creation. So silly and so powerful…. Wow. What a strange thread for Matt Damon’s Downsizing.
:)

There’s actually a connection to Downsizing since the end of the world/nature is involved.
But Mother is definitely a better movie!
