For Rogerebert.com: Supernatural is coming to a close. My thoughts.

It’s Women Writers Week over on Ebert – 5th year in a row! All content on the front page – reviews – interviews – articles – are written by women. Quite a sight! We all pitched stuff for this special week. And my pitch, which was accepted, was An Ode to Supernatural. I am nothing if not consistent. In the middle of Women Writers Week, let’s hear it for the boys.

God. This was beautiful to read. Thank you so much for all your writing on the show and for giving us obsessives this space. I don’t comment here much, but I check your blog every day.

I am several episodes behind on the last season. I’m from the UK and watching newly-aired SPN involves a lot of shady online activity. But you can bet I’ll be up at five in the morning on the day the last episode airs to watch it as soon as I can find a stream. I’m not ready.

Nighthawk: thank you so much!! I have loved your comments (when you have commented) – and I appreciate everyone’s presence here.

“shady online activity” – ha. I have heard tell of this from other friends not in the US or Canada.

I’m not ready either for the final episode – and now I’m afraid we won’t get one at all. Maybe they knew the shutdown was coming for the last week, and hurried up and filmed a final episode. Which is … not ideal. I can’t imagine what must be going on behind the scenes now.

  2. Carolyn Clarke says:

Brilliant, insightful and entertaining as ever.

Just one comment..I agree that Bobby Singer was probably a heavy drinker (who wouldn’t be, considering the circumstances), but we never actually saw him drunk, particularly when the boys were concerned. He was someone the boys could always rely on and real drunks never are.

    • sheila says:

I know we never saw him drunk, but he is referred to repeatedly as such – including “blackout drunk” so that’s why I said it. It is a flaw that he was never shown in a falldown-drunk state, but it wasn’t really the place to get into that.

Thank you for reading, Carolyn, and thank you for all your support over the years.

What do we think of the shutdown? I have so many feelings!

That was excellent! Pointing out the wonderful things about the show and reminding us all of the things that are to be cherished.

I have such an uneasy hope for a good ending to the series. And I hope Jensen gets his wish for something as deep as Dean.

    • sheila says:

My hopes are uneasy too – especially now with the shutdown.

Thanks for your comments over the years. It’s been fun!

  4. Barb says:

This is a beautiful piece! Really a summing up of a lot of things you’ve talked about here.

I’m not ready to say goodbye, either, in spite of knowing that, yes, it’s time.

    • sheila says:

Thank you, Barb – I am glad you got to go to a convention recently. It’s weird that this whole experience is closing up shop – especially in lieu of the shutdown. I wonder how this is going to be handled.

  5. Lyrie says:

What a beautiful text, thanks Sheila. It’s always a pleasure to be reminded of what makes that show special – and of all the great discussions we have here. Recaps for decades to come, no pressure, ha!

    • sheila says:

Lyrie – I am so glad you ended up here because of your Supernatural passion – it has been so much fun.

“no pressure” ha. I have an enormous deadline April 1 … but I was thinking my enforced isolation might at least give me some extra time to do “Fresh Blood.” No promises, though!

  6. Sheaness says:

Thanks, again, for giving us the space we need to come together over this amazing show. If you resume recaps, I cannot express how awesome it would be. But no pressure, for real.

    • sheila says:

Sheaness – sorry it took me a while to get back to this comment thread.

I still have so much work – pandemic notwithstanding – but I have thought – well maybe this time of enforced isolation might be a good time to do some more re-caps. Especially since the show is prematurely shut down. No promises but it has at least occurred to me!

It has been my pleasure hosting this ongoing discussion series here.
