Photo of the Day: I messed this one up

Every time I look at this photo it makes me laugh. I took it during my first year in New York. I was living on the Upper West Side with my brother and his girlfriend Maria, and attending my first year of grad school. I had been out in Chicago for the last five years, and had only seen my family once or twice a year for all that time, so it was fun being back in the fold. My parents came down to visit for a weekend, and we all took a jaunt out to the Statue of Liberty, with my Uncle Tom. It was a really fun day.

The statue cast a long shadow on the pavement, and my parents stood in the shadow. It was my brother’s idea to get into the pose of the statue, so as to cast the same shadow, and then I was supposed to take a picture of it. Which I did. Only I botched it up (which we didn’t realize until we got the pictures developed: remember: no digital.) I was supposed to not include my brother in the photograph, so the illusion would be that there were two statues. But I didn’t understand the instructions, and so I included my wacky brother, making this weird pose, in front of my seemingly oblivious smiling parents.

We CRIED with laughter when we got the photos back. Bren: “Sheil, I wasn’t supposed to be in the photo.”

So now, what it looks like is my parents being menaced by this weird crouching guy off to the side. Who also happens to be my brother.

Fun day.

(Always eerie to see the Towers.)

This is a HILARIOUS photo-taking accident! It made me laugh out loud…then I saw the Twin Towers and immediately plunged into sadness.

That’s how it goes now, in 2021 A.D.

And I live in Austin, Texas. It has snowed all morning, but I have power (elation), but no water (depression.) Glad Ted Cruz got to go to Cancun, though!

Sarah – such a long overdue response. I haven’t been responding here – a chaotic busy time – but I keep meaning to come back so here I am.

// then I saw the Twin Towers and immediately plunged into sadness. //

      exactly my reaction too.

Oh man Ted Cruz. I saw some ridiculous picture of him loading a crate of bottled water into a car – in a totally empty parking lot. Not good enough, Cruz.

Hope you all are doing better? Been worrying so much!
