Gaia is on hallucinogenic drugs. Probably magic mushrooms. Mushrooms are taking over the earth. Watch your back. Creepy and effective. I reviewed for Ebert.

This sounded like it would be right up my alley and it was. The fungal skin and the dreams/hallucinations were creepy and fun. Parts were just beautiful. Some of the effects and the sense of disorientation made me think of Annihilation, and the mushroom creatures were Guillermo del Toro-ish. Gabi was realistic and resourceful. Stefan was sensitive but dutiful. It was well done.
And I can’t pass up quoting Adam from Only Lovers Left Alive, “it just goes to show we don’t know shit about fungi.”
So glad you saw it! I loved the hallucinations – really appreciated the inventiveness and yet also the simplicity. You don’t need special effects – just a shot of hands going into mud can be very surreal and creepy.
Poor Stefan. He reminded me of a young River Phoenix – mainly because of the Mosquito Coast association – but I thought he did a good job of suggesting a boy who had no idea of civilization, no contact with modern things, and probably has barely said 10 words in his whole entire life. Very believable!
