I created a Substack months ago, since I was dissatisfied with my Tinyletter newsletter – its format, and also what I was doing with it. I needed a fresh start. I imported all the newsletter subscribers (thank you all!), and decided I would devote my Substack to long-form pieces I either couldn’t place anywhere or just needed to get off my chest. I also decided to have a paid option and a free option. I’m also including a link to my Venmo, just in case anyone wanted to throw some coins my way. I’ve been blogging here for free for 20 years and am happy people like what I do. But if you feel inspired to pay me, then go right ahead. It’s all appreciated.
I’d like to put out a piece a month on Substack maybe more. I’d like them to be the kind of deep dives I used to do here, and that I used to do for my column at Film Comment.
I decided to launch it with an essay about Lisa Marie Presley. It took me a couple of days to figure out what I was feeling, what it was about her – besides the connection to Elvis, but also including the connection to Elvis – that mattered so much to me.
Thanks, as always, for reading.
