Mirrors #12

I have a lot to say about movie scenes where men look at themselves in the mirror. And I keep babbling about it, tagging posts with “mirrors” just for fun. Women sometimes have similar scenes in films – and I take note of them when I see them – but I’m mostly interested in the men.

So it’s great to trip over a scene that states my thesis for me. (This is from the great Senso, directed by Luchino Visconti)

  1. I’m not sure if I’ve ever recommended it, but THE MAN WITHOUT A FACE, Mel Gibson’s directorial debut, has a scene where Gibson’s character–who was badly deformed on one side of his face and body in a car wreck–uses a mirror to allow himself to see his “undamaged” face again. (It’s a favorite movie of mine, one that makes me dearly wish Gibson hadn’t…well.)

Oh yeah! I remember that scene! It’s a little reminiscent of the Johnny Handsome mirror scene – of my favorite mirror scenes. I haven’t seen Man Without a Face in forEVER.
