The poster for One Million Years B.C.., with Raquel Welch in a fur bikini is as iconic as the Farrah Fawcett poster. It casts as long a shadow. The poster makes Welch – a small woman – look ten stories tall. She really did loom that large in the culture. She made it to the walls of Shawshank Prison, taking over for Marilyn Monroe. Welch’s career had far more interesting twists and turns than just “60s/70s Sex Symbol”, although my God, she was IT at the time.
I’ve posted this clip from The Cher Show before because it’s perfection. I can’t even count how many times I’ve watched it.
My friend Dan Callahan comes through, as always, in his tribute to Welch at Ebert.
RIP Raquel Welch. I became a fan of hers at 10 when my mother took me to see Kansas City Bomber.
I mean, it’s a classic.
I thought she was wonderfully funny in The Three Musketeers.
Yes!
