I was puzzled how the Italian distributors arrived at that as a translation for “Citizen Kane.” It seems to mean in Italian “Fourth Power.” Then it occurred to me that an idiomatic back translation would be “The Fourth Estate.” Not a bad title actually. It suggests that they saw it not as a film primarily about an individual but about the power of the press. According to the Italian wikipedia the release year in Italy was 1950.

Phil – I was curious about the whole thing, too – Thank you so much for looking into it. Interesting! Hmm – your theory about the power of the press is also in the poster-design itself, with all that swirling text.
