Baseball Cards

Reading this post – and looking at the pictures – makes my heart HURT. I look at those baseball cards, and I remember being this girl (notice the shirt):

I think I’ve heard of this guy, Carlton Fisk, but who is the guy with the funny name, Carl Yastrzemski? Did he play for Boston?

  2. Ah, Fisk, good ol’ #72 :)

The olden days when a good day was getting a White Sox player in your packet, and a bad day was getting a Cubs player.

I remember a lot of those card layouts and graphics. Baseball cards lost all appeal to me once one was able to simply plunk down for an entire set. It seemed pointless trying to amass a full set when it could simply be purchased. And what’s the fun in that?

  3. Rob says:

Is JFH serious? If so, yesto Yaz. Obviously, Carlton Fisk’s homer in the 1975 series is one of baseball’s most magical moments. One of my faves, too.

  4. And no trip to the White Hen Pantry for baseball cards was complete without some Lik-a-Maid. I can’t think of one without thinking of the other.

    Is that Woodie the cat??

    Jackie:

Widdy!!! hahaha Yes, that is the famous Widdy.

Dearest: I remember helping Jean memorize the names of the Sox in 1975. I’d say the first name, and she would pipe up [4 years old!] with the last: as I recall there were 3 Ricks: Miller, Wise and Willoughby], but I’d say Rick three times and she would get it right. The big problem was Carl: sometimes she would answer Yasztremski, and others Tonfisk. love, dad

  8. red says:

    Laughing out loud, Dad.

My favorite player was Carl Tonfisk. Definitely.

  9. JFH says:

Of course I was joking, Rob… but one of my favorite baseball memories was a different incident involving Fisk: making rookie Dion Sanders run out a pop up.

i am obsessed with this fantasy baseball i am playing–i’m using yaz from the ’68 season and he is cleaning up. however, as much as i love ‘ton Fisk in real life, he is sucking on my fantasy baseball team. he’s hitting .162. just thought you all should know what’s going on in Fantasy Baseball Land.

  11. red says:

    Siobhan –

I need to know what is happening in fantasy baseball land. Desperately.

  12. siobhan says:

do you really? b/c i could talk for far too long about it.
cy young is my #1 pitcher and you can see why they named a pitching award after him. his endurance is incredible.
another disappointment is jimmie foxx. i thought he’d be a sure thing at first base. but he’s hitting in the .150 range, too.
but ted williams, yaz and cy young are the real deals. in fantasy baseball land. and in real life. they are unbelievable.
in my fantasy baseball league, Ted has the most votes for MVP.
i know everyone was so so curious about that!
    i’ll stop now.

  13. red says:

Please keep talking like that for a long long time, siobhan.

Have you read Teammates, Siobhan? Some awesome stuff in there about Ted Williams.

  14. siobhan says:

haven’t read teammates. i’ll have to check it out.
but i’m in the midst of “summer of ’49” by david halberstam–which involves alot of Ted. maybe i’ll read that book when i’m finished.
one (LAST) note on my fantasy team–pedro of ’99 is having a similar, if not better, season than cy young. just goes to show what a special, special, gifted man we were lucky enough to have on our team. i’ll miss him!

  15. Ken Hall says:

Siobhan, that sounds like a Strat-o-Matic thing. I have done a great deal of Strat-o-Matic in my day (never got round to the Hall of Fame sets, though).

  16. mitch says:

Yeah, Siobhan – are you playing Strat?

I used to play Pursue the Pennant a few years back, when I still had spare time, and I miss it. Might have to try it again.

  17. MikeR says:

    Sweet pic.

I played my “Tessie” EP while getting ready for work this morning. The Murphys really did a great job on that – it gives me chills and I’m not even a Red Sox fan (hope they do the full Warped Tour this year).

Siobhan, I never would have guessed you for a fantasy manager. I guess I ought to think about doing something like that – it’s probably the only way to ever get Joe Torre back to the Cardinals where he belongs!

  18. Emily says:

Love the mop-top Beatles haircut, Sheila.

  19. mere says:

    oooh. baby widdy!

  20. red says:

    Emily –

Haircut care of Sheila O’Malley senior!!

  21. siobhan says:

it’s called SimuLeague. you pick your team–but you have a really low budget. so steinbrenner would not do so well in this league! so i have a lot of great players, but couldn’t afford a lot of their best years (they are all in today’s money standards). so i have ’90 roger clemens, b/c i couldn’t afford ’86. the league is off of espn.com. it’s really fun but it seriously has turned not so fun as i have become far more competitive than i should be. i lie awake at bed in night thinking of how to make my bullpen stronger (limit pitches? limit days pitched?). it’s become a bit of a problem.

  22. dad says:

Dearest: Siobhan sent me some game box scores from her dream team, but I just don’t understand what’s going on. I get fantasy leagues because they are based on what the players are doing today, but that’s completely different from what Siobhan is up to. dad
