What a great panel. Fonda permanently blushing, Bette smoking, Deano having no idea where he is…and Howard Cosell possibly with his own hair.
Those Dean Martin roasts are priceless, Sheila, if for no other reason than to see the giants who participated. He got everyone! I recently Googled Charlie Callas to see if he was still alive (don’t ask me why), stumbled onto those clips, and the next time I looked at the clock over an hour had passed. Joyously. One of my favorites who was not a giant but a regular on these shows, and whose career got revived because of them, was Red Buttons. Remember his signature “Never got a dinner” routines? They were hilarious. One of his best lines ever which he said while roasting Muhammad Ali was, “Why is this man getting a dinner? Why even Uncle Remus, who once said to Uncle Ben, ‘You’re a credit to your rice’, never got a dinner!” Floyd Patterson almost fell off the dais.
Right up there with Betty Davis’s bra serving as shoulder pads!
I literally don’t know what to do with myself right now.
hahahahahahahaha
Scribbler – I love to see all of those people lined up at the crazy roast table. Now THOSE people were wild.
