Snapshots

— Spent the weekend at the beach. Drove there on Saturday, spent a couple hours, reading, swimming, writing, clearing my head. Then on Sunday, I picked up Allison and we drove down to the beach. It was an adventure for two city girls, and it was so much fun to have her along. We’re going to make it a ritual. We talked the entire day. We swam multiple times, and the water was so refreshing that we paddled around moaning outright, “OHHHHH this feels so GOOD.” We drove back to the city, feeling fully relaxed and happy.

— There’s so much else going on in my life and I have not been mentioning any of it. Not to be coy, but because I have learned through experience that babbling about things before they have actually happened is not always a good thing. Besides, I’m busy. The reading of my script in New York has finally been nailed down, after about two months of scheduling and backs and forths, and it is now for sure happening on June 25. This was confirmed a couple of days back and since then everything has gone into warp speed. Or, not exactly warp speed (I still was able to go to the beach two days in a row), but certainly accelerated. Once the flyer is done (and I am so pleased with it: the designer is just brilliant, and took my one or two comments and ran with them), and once the press release goes out, I’ll put something up on my site about it. There are details that need to be nailed down, etc., but we have an actual stage manager this go-round, so that is thrilling. Much of that detail-stuff is out of my hands, being handled by someone else. Luxury. It still feels like it’s a long way away, but things are going to start speeding up shortly. June 25 is going to be here before I know it.

— I loved Moonrise Kingdom so much. I also loved that it was filmed in the town where I grew up.

— Big crazy reunion this coming weekend with pretty much every person I knew in college, including my first major boyfriend. The old crowd. The last time we saw one another (in many cases) was at our friend Brett’s funeral last year. We are gathering in Soho for dinner, and then drinks on a rooftop or something like that, and people are driving in from other states, and it’s going to be insane. It occurred to me today that in 2009, this would have been the sort of gathering I would have been unable to attend. I went to my friend’s birthday party in, I think, late June of 2009, and it was a major mistake. I stopped going out after that. So I am glad that I am actually looking forward to it, and not with a sense of dread. These are my friends. They have known me since I was 16 years old. We just buried our first friend. It will be good to be together.

So glad you loved Moonrise Kingdom! It’s handily my favorite narrative movie of the year so far (only This Is Not a Film tops it and no other film comes close). The Françoise Hardy scene alone has as much to say about restless youth and rebellion/revolution as just about anything Godard or Truffaut made in the ’60s.

I just loved it so much. I can’t wait to see it again.

Would be great to come see some of your work — a little far for me to make it — but certainly wish you well.
