I never get sick of it. Ever. Every time I watch this, I think …. they’re not gonna pull it off. I KNOW the end … but I forget it. Every time.

I think about that every time I watch the movie or see footage of that game. I totally know how it’s going to end. I know the final score. I know who scored which goal in which period and how many minutes there were on the clock when they did it, but every time I see it, I have that angst, like I have no idea what’s going to happen, if they’re going to win or not. I love it.
(BTW – I just got my copy of Vladislav Tretiak’s autobiography [have you read it?]…can’t WAIT to read the whole thing, but couldn’t help it and skipped ahead to the chapter on Lake Placid. I’ll post about it later tonight)
I remember seeing this in real time when I was a kid – and it was taped – that was the big deal … taping it for prime time … unprecedented!!!
I haven’t read the autobiography – I really should – what an interesting man. What he’s seen!! Just in terms of his society – but then also his sport. amazing.
I remember that quote from him, about the 1980 Olympics: “In short, we did not respect their team.” [Long pause] “And you cannot do that in hockey.”
Don’t buy it. When I’m finished with it, I’m sending it to you. I’ve done a little bit more reading, and if there was EVER a book you deserved. This one. This one.
And Sheila, I have to warn you, when I said I’d post about that chapter later…the reason I haven’t is because I’m trying to pick up pieces of my heart off the floor. You’ll read for yourself.
Oh man.
I know a bit about his story – the dedication, the sacrifice – and also what happened to him after 1980 and the thwarted opportunities – God, it makes me see RED – stupid commies …
I can’t wait to read it!! I’ve seen him interviewed and he always seemed very serious, but also … there was a self-knowledge there, an honesty – I really respond to it. Doesn’t seem ilke there’s ANY bullshit there.
There’s certainly EGO – as there should be – but not bull shit.
When did the book come out? I feel like I need to read it immediately now! So that my heart can shatter on the floor too!
“Doesn’t seem ilke there’s ANY bullshit there.”
There isn’t, most of the time. Wait until you read his chapter about Lake Placid. Heart. Pieces.
It came out in 1987. He retired from pro hockey in ’84. Okay, I’m reading it as fast as I can so I can send it to you. I literally need to talk about this book with someone.
It’s been a while since I’ve visited, and absolutely have to comment on this post.
There is a REASON that hockey is THE Canadian sport.
Because even when you think you know the answer, it can change… or not. In the last second.
As someone who grew up next to a ‘neighborhood rink’ (the neighbor’s garden) that led to the neighbor playing pro hockey in Europe, it is every Canadian kid’s dream. And with the success of the Cdn women’s team, I’m talking EVERY Canadian kid.
Not intending to steal the thunder of this particularly kick-butt game. Just had to comment.
Meeting of the minds
A still (below the fold) from the filmed interview of Kurt Russell and Herb Brooks, in preparation for the film Miracle – the story of the 1980 Olympic hockey team, which of course – we all know – is a…
