The faces just stun me.

You know, the first time I ever walked into a cotton mill’s twister room, I was shocked that this almost pre-industrial area was even allowed by a modern day OSHA. Those bobbins are spinning so fast that you could easily lose a finger if you weren’t paying attention. To allow children to work in that environment is unconscionable.
That said, the face tells me she already feels that she is destined to a life of underclass and early death.
Good lord.
I hate it when I sound like a lefty, but that heartbreaking image is exactly what you get when you put your faith in the conscience of the upper class – of any upper class. Humans have a remarkable ability to fail to see what they would find very inconvenient to see…
And I guess, Mike R – i’m not one for bemoaning human nature. Seriously. The wrong was corrected (in our country). It took blood, sweat, tears, like most corrections do. It took laws (John Adams: “We will be a nation of laws, not men”) … but yes, humans don’t want to see things that are unpleasant.
I include myself in that.
Don’t you?
